Best load development process for hunting rifle

Audette, Satterlee (abbreviated Audette), or Wheeler... six of one half dozen of another. They are all variations on a theme, like adding to get a result of five. Which one is best? That's up to you, which is better 4+1 or 3+2?

I can't believe I am getting sucked in. One of those does NOT show you a load. It may show you areas to look but you still need to test/retest them and they often do not pan out. The other two show you the powder charge, not just possibilities. Alex is just doing a versions of the Audette ladder. OCW actually works very well too but requires more rounds. The Audette Ladder test will show you the load every single time with minimal rounds. If it does not that combo simply will NOT work in your rifle. The other one that starts with an S does not work. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and have performed it 9-10 times. Of those it worked 3-4 which means the other 5-6 I wasted bullets, powder and barrel life. If you have 600 plus yards do a real ladder. If you are limited do an OCW at 100 yards. These are the quickest and most repeatable methods.

Sorry to have done that, but I knew that if I posted something so egregious you would stick around.
I completely understand why the keyboard ninjas would make you want to leave, but the truth is, we NEED folks like you here. Your reply is case in point. Again,I'm sorry for the dirty trick, but I think some just needed to see how valuable some experience really is, especially when weighed against the folks that bought a 300 WM, watched a couple of videos and are suddenly subject matter experts, spewing forth on the internet.

LOL! Thanks a lot. You guys really should sign up on LRO if you are not already.

Nothing wrong with ladder tests when using known bullet/powder combos (300wm h1000 and 215, etc). Also, you probably know this, but all testing can be done with a new barrel, but don't do fine tuning until after around 50 rds.

This is my basic, by myself at the range method, to get a rough idea. Fine tuning follows

If my buddies go with, I have them by the target and mark each shot on paper at 1000.

Excuse my ignorance but what is LRO? I'm always willing to learn new/better ways to reload/develop loads.....There is so much out there to learn with reloading, sometimes it's overwhelming.

LOL the problem I have with learning new ways is that it usually makes me want spend more money than I want to!!! But I have no problem doing so if it's going to improve my loads, ect.

Thank you for your generosity of helping others in forum!

I understand the overwhelming part especially since you have a much harder time sifting through who does or does not know what they are talking about than 10 years ago.

I will always be an advocate of constantly learning. I have tried every method of load development I am aware of and some just work better than others. Some just do not work.

If they can show you it works on paper, it works. If they all work on paper, then pick the most efficient.

I'll 2nd and 3rd the satterlee method. Ive done the OCW a few times before and I am just finishing up my first try at the Satterlee method. It is way easier, faster, and burns up alot less reloading supplies to get the same results. I'm not very experienced with the reloading thing so take my opinion with a grain of salt but the Satterlee method worked great for me.

This is incorrect and the exact reason I was speaking of in my first post. You will get LUCKY with it once in a while. I have done it 8-9 times and I put all shots on paper. It does not always show you the load period. If it worked for you go by a lottery ticket. VELOCITY nodes MUST line up with ACCURACY nodes. They do NOT always coincide as this method suggests. Just because you find a flat spot in velocity and es does not mean it will shoot accurately long range and that is a FACT.

If that is the case, then why do we see so many recommendations on this forum for this method?

But to your points about testing and verifying the accuracy of the load with a flat spot; isn't it implied that in order to have an accurate LR load, you obviously need to test it out. And if it doesn't work, change some variable or scrap it and move on.

Not here to start anything. Here to learn.

I just signed up on LRO per your suggestion, is your name the same in LRO? I just signed up so I can read your methods of reloading. Is there a thread or two that you suggest I look at? I end up getting the job done bet spend way too much time and money on components getting there.
