Best load development process for hunting rifle

just picked up new rifle. This will ultimately be a hunting rifle with occasional range time.
I'm trying to decide what process to use to minimize number of rounds down the pipe if I can help it.
Thus is my first attempt at reloading for a magnum caliber.
Cooper M52 Open County Long Range 300 Win Mag (1-10 twist)
Atlas Brass
Berger 210 VLD Hunders
Federal 215 Mag Match Primers
RE-22 powder
Redding Master Hunter Dies

I was going to load up (3) sets of 10 rounds increasing powder charge by .5 grains only going as high as my Berger reloading manual states and shoot @ 300-500 yards. (Will load 15 rounds @ 2 gr below book max to use as barrel break-in/sighters/fowlers)

But.... should I start @ the lands? .01-.02 jump? I'd rather not jam.
Berger recommends a seating depth test @ .010, .040, .090, .120. But that seams like a lot of extra shooting for a magnum hunting rifle.

This is where I'd like your input please.

Start at around.030 off the lands and follow the rest of your mentioned procedure. Don't forget H1000 and Berger 215.

I think I am done offering load development advise on this forum but I will say RL22 is temp sensitive and I would not even consider it. I would go with H1000 and the 215 Berger.

I am on LRO. I will be doing some youtube vids for those who care to watch. I get so many PMs about the subject. I have been trying to put it together for over a year due to being busy at work. I expect the first before the end of the year.

Sounds good. I chose RE-22 based on recommendation from local shop who also shoots 300 WM, but I like temp stability. And also chose the 210's cause they didn't have any 215's on the shelf. I'll certainly give H1000 and the 215's a go though.

My advice is the same, but more general. My load development often occurs at 70-90F....I'm hunting today at 20F. I always use Hodgdon Extreme line of powders.

There really is no nice way to put it. Too many keyboard ninjas jumping in telling me their way is better. I absolutely know there is more than one way to skin a cat but that does not mean they are all the best. I will cover several different methods and discuss the ones I use. For those that are interested they can watch and ask questions on LRO for those who already know everything they don't have to watch. It will be a win win for everyone. LOL!


In the mean time Alex Wheeler has the best load development on the net and I can't teach anything you won't learn from him.

I just read this thread on rokslide where this guy was arguing with you. I think I see your point. Sorry you gotta deal w that.
But.... I did read what you had to say and will apply that into my test when I get a chance.

I don't know Alex Wheeler, but the best reloading advice I ever received came in the form of reading the OCW method and applying it. I have modified it some to work in chronograph results, previously tested knowledge on group shape and Berger's oal article.

i have taken a couple rifles and cut group size nearly in half with this method. I can talk more to specific points, but won't write it all here at risk of sounding like a ninja.

The Hodgdon Extreme line is a specific that has worked well for hunting.

If you have a good chronograph, I would recommend looking up the Satterlee method. That has produced good areas to further develop rather quickly. I also look at optimum barrel time using quick load with the internet OBT charts.
