Barrel Break-in...necessary or not needed?

I just purchased a new Savage 110 Storm in 7mm RM and am wondering about barrel break in. Is it necessary, and, if so, what is the proper way to do it? I've seen some suggestions on the internet about cleaning after EVERY shot x 10, and then every other shot x 10, etc, etc. That just seems like overkill.

What would the experts here recommend for this gun?

with my 300 ultra mag I cleaned after every shot for like the first 3 shots and then just started shooting it. shoots lights out. Krieger barrel though not a factory gun. I would clean the first couple of shots at least. but like cohunt said youre going to get a million different opinions on this topic.

There's two ends of the spectrum here. I don't think cleaning every single shot for 50 rounds is logical and I don't think it's smart to just start shooting a barrel straight off the shelf. Here's what I do and it works for my guns.

As soon as I get the barrel back from my smith I clean it thoroughly before even screwing it into the action. Run a patch of kroil down the bore and that's how it sits until I am ready to shoot it.

When it's time to shoot I...

patch out the kroil
Fire 3 rounds
Clean
Fire 3-5 rounds clean
Evaluate

If I feel like that last clean had minimal fouling I proceed with load development. I've never had a brux, Krieger, or bartlein need more than described above. My $0.02 worth

before I built my muzzle flush system it took a few rounds to fire lap the throats but the last barrels that I have chambered with the flush system leave a very nice finish in the throat and they seem to not copper up and break in very quickly

This was posted by Len Backus and was a good discussion with lots of opinions and information.

It is amazing how dirty a barrel will be after the very first shot ;) when they start cleaning quicker I start shooting strings

This is the reason I started using a bore snake while hunting when I can to sweep the junk out of the barrel before I shoot it again to keep the fouling from adding wear to the barrel.

It doesn't remove the copper fouling but it does remove most of the powder fouling.

Even after you do a break in, the carbon left by the powder is abrasive and the next bullet picks this up and caries it down the barrel and this can shorten barrel life.

Just another trick for extending barrel life.
