338 ultra ? dead or still being used?

I had Hart Barrels do all the work on mine. They built a box mag and let me know it would only have a mag capacity of 3 rounds total (2 in mag + 1 in chamber). It was an expensive project.

Thanks JE. I don't plan on getting fancy. Considering a Tikka switch barrel once WTO releases their SL for the Tikka. I can get about 3.5" COAL with that. Is that long enough? I'm not opposed to single feed for this one. But, I keep asking myself if I should just go Edge for a dedicated single feed.

I know the RUM is plenty, but just seems a waste to not utilize its strengths if I end up single feed.

How does the chassis handle heavy recoil? Not asking about durability, but asking in reference to felt recoil transferee to the shooter?

The first 700 338 RUM I had was a conversion from a 338 WM. (BAD IDEA.) But the fat RUM case will not feed out of the magazine past the rails unless modified - widened just right - or it will be a single feed! -- You need a RUM action LIKE THIS :D (Need a RUM box too.)

Cheaper Than Dirt has them too.

I am surprised that your 300 WM did not feed with the exception of the vented mag box (Required for the RUM because the shoulder dimension is to large for the standard mag box) I have converted some that the rails needed to be opened as you said, but most will work, especially if a center feed is used. (I highly recommend going to a center feed)

Because most of the stagger feed long actions will work (There is only .019 thousandths difference in the base diameter between the two). the vented mag box is the key, or a single feed mag box works best in any large cartridge because they can be tuned to feed best.

Here is the standard mag box that is required for the RUMs. If you like the flush floor metal. (I bought a 10 round detachable mag and it was useless and also hanged down to far and was in the way. Besides, Who needs 10 rounds of 300 RUM to hunt with when 3 is/has been more than enough.

If you are looking foe the action, As Lefty said go with a action designed for the Big RUM case and the problems will be solved.

My .338 RUM started life as a 7mm RemMag and has had no mods except barrel change, feeds fine from the BDL mag.

Hello All,
I have a 338 RUM and love it for big game. Would anyone know where I can order virgin brass? Being in Hawaii, no one here sells much of any brass. I have tried different vendors on line for over 2 years with no luck. Would appreciate any suggestions of where to purchase the brass.
Aloha!

I would assume you can order it directly from Nosler's website? That's what I use and it's great brass.

If you are going to go build one you may as well go with a 28" or 30" tube to get the most out of that case. I'm getting 3300 with the 225 AB out of my 338 edge (28" + break). I was very pleased with the bear that I shot this spring at 600 yards with that bullet. I packed it around for a few days in the hills and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, both weight and lenght were very managable. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't my 24" barreled 8lb 280 AI, but it didn't bother me.

The 338 edge is a 300 RUM necked up (bit more case capacity than the 338 RUM). If your going with a custom barrel the only thing that will cost you more that a 338 RUM would be dies. And for that expence you get a nice little gain in the fps department!

If you would like to play with one before you decide, just hit me up sometime. I'm over in the baker/GR valley quite often.
