NEW 6.5 WIN. LONG RANGE MAGNUM!!!

The cartridge I'm talking about has actually been around since 1958. It's a 7mm rem mag case necked down to 6.5 caliber... Some older members might see where I'm going with this.

I'm just curious, with everybody on here talking 6.5's, how has the 264 win mag not come up in more threads?

I understand back in the 1950's it was built to be a flat shooting high performance round, and it was, and still is, but side by side with the popular cartridges of the time, 30-06, 270 win, and 4 years later the 7mm rem mag, it was considered to be a barrel burner. So it faded from memory and was eclipsed by other high performance cartridges that are easier on barrels.

Back to my original question. Today we have the 6.5 prc, 26 nosler, 6.5x300 weatherby, 6.5x300win, and more wildcats than I can list. People are excited when they shoot out a barrel! Now they can try a new brand: proof, bartlien, brux, krieger, and share their experience with all their buddies. So why is the 264 not back on the radar? Because it's not new and shiny?

I'm hoping some old timer has recently looked in the very back corner of their safe, pulled out the old winchester m70 264, whiped the dust off and compared the old trusty stead next to the new flat shooting 6.5's of 2018.

264WM is an awesome cartridge! I have 2....a 1960ish Belgium Browning I inherited from my Dad, that I don't shoot, and a late 60s Model 700 that I bought from a friend. I've used the M700 for a guide rifle for 30 years and with modern bullets and powders, it shoots better now than when I bought it. It's a handloaders cartridge for sure but it's a "Good One"! I've shot Nosler Partitions, Nosler BTs, Speer SPs, Barnes X, Barnes TSXs, Barnes TTSXs, Barnes LRXs, VLDs, and now trying Hammer Bullets. It has shot sub MOA with everything I've loaded and sub .5 MOA with a couple. At high velocity with these bullets, it has devastating terminal performance! Although I have several other 6.5s, I can't see myself ever being without a 264WM! I hope this Great Old Cartridge does make a comeback.....thanks for starting this thread.

(said in this fashion can be construed as referring to people in general)
You added this on your own. I said it in a way as in that's just not something wildcatters normally do. I didn't say nobody has ever done it. Roy did it, and it was stupid, but that's my personal opinion. I never pointed him out specifically.

Alright, got it. When someone pointed out Weatherby as an example to the contrary of your original statement you could've said something to the effect of "Weatherby not withstanding" or "forgot about that one" but instead I guess you've got to double down & reassert your infallibility.

If I'm wrong I'll admit it, done so many times on here. But if someone takes my words in a different context and misunderstands the original intent I had behind them, then that's not my fault, and I'm not going to apologize for someone else's error. I never said it has 100% never been done before, I said it wasn't something people do... As in common practice for wildcatters and cartridge designers in modern times.

When people start apologizing for other people's mistakes you get the welfare system, trillions of dollars of debt, and generations of people who have self-hatred and self-guilt.

not sure it was a shoddy upbringing it didn't have the internet hype and BS. it was twisted and throated for what was available back then 100-120 gr. flat base bullets. to me changing barrels is not a four letter word, people customize cars or their homes all the time.
twist them off, twist them on just another day in shooting sports
Remington should have fixed it in the Sendero platform and they didn't. I had a westerner back before I got married. All the hype of the speed I didn't see back then. There were no sleek bullets. I shot 300's as a rule and I couldn't see beyond lighter recoil a good use for it.Today would be different but the 140 partition was the bullet for long range at the time and to be honest it didn't do anything I couldn't do with a 270 for here in the east. Of course no internet shopping and you had buy what was available locally and that was slim compared to the 24 27 28 and 30 cal options.

They already make the right barrels for other chamberings... Imagine a 5R Milspec Gen2 with a 5/8x24 threaded 26" 1:8 twist chambered for .264 WinMag. I'd buy one just for the hell of it.
I'd buy one too, its one of best guns remington makes right now for sure - while they are at it, they can do something about those crappy xmark pro triggers.

They finally found a trigger that's "lawyer proof"...No matter how crappy it is. I wouldn't hold my breath on that changing anytime soon.

don't care for belts but love the 8mm cREMe de la MAGic and kinda like the 340 Wby but have taken far more game with the 300 Wind Bag, go figure

love the 6.5/264 caliber, but don't understand all the "high bc" bullshirt, 338 and 375 cals offer much, much higher bc's and are FAR more suitable for long range hunting... ON ANY PLANET or continent on Earth for that matter ...

don't hate the Creed and understand it's use and place, but absolutely sick of hearing about it's pseudo supremacy, seems every gun convo on the web has to be perverted by it's glorious kingly presence

264 Win Mag ? know an old timer here in Alaska that has taken many dump truck loads of moose and black bear with one, even a few brownies that expired from well placed lung shots with a simple concoction of a near primer poppin load of H4831 and a 140 gr Partition bullet

pretty sure the same can be done with newer sixfive's and same bullet/velocity, but in that old dudes eyes it's all new fangled horse puckey

You don't add a belt to a non-belted cartridge, just like you don't remove a belted from a belted cartridge. It's superfluous work.

I'm one who does superfluous work. I turn the belt off of 7 Remington Magnum brass to make it into 9.3 x 64 brenneke brass. Alright then neck it to 6.5 put it Weatherby radius on the shoulder and it's called 6.5 Coyle. Superfluous perhaps fun absolutely.

This was my 264 win...built by a buddy of mine on a Winchester push feed action and a take off Laredo stock...loved that rifle...sold it because I'm a lefty, and wanted all left hand rifles...wish I had it back
