300 win mag 215 bergers vs 190 gr

I just purchased a new toy. It's a Remington 700 long range 300 win mag. 26" barrel 1-10 twist with an ajustable Xmark trigger and a bell and carlson stock. Unfortunately I have run into a big problem with the rifle and have to send it back to remington for repair.

So while I'm waiting on it to be repaired I was hoping I could find pros and cons between the 215 and 190 gr bergers. I have a kodiak bear hunt coming up in 2019 and I want this rifle spot on.

My max oal is 3.6" in this rifle. And while breaking in the rifle barrel I was using hornady precision hunter 200 hr ammo with good results. Then started loading a ladder from 73 to 75 grs in .5 gr increments with the 215s. But before I could finish the accuracy was poor and I ran in to the problem on the rifle.

Any input on the bullets and personal load data would be appreciated. Also performance on the game you have taken would be great. Thanks in advance guys.

Only bullet I've run in my 300 Win Mag has been the 215 with H1000 at 30 thou off. Accuracy is amazing and load development simple. Rifle is a full custom and drives the 215 right at 3000 fps. Performance on deer has been very good, but lots of meat loss. Have only killed one elk but the 215 performed. Deer have ranged from 500 to 734 yds. Elk was at 625 yds.

I have the same rifle. Have very good results out to 1400 yds with 208 Amax and 210 Berger VLD Hunters over a stout charge of 7828. A Timney trigger is a must.

I don't want to highjack this thread, but will the 1-10 twist handle the 215gr bullets and maximize accuracy? I ask because I am considering a 300wm build soon. Was thinking 1-9 but have access to a 1-10 barrel that would save me some $$$$.

My 1 in 10 twist seems ok. I'm 1500 ft ASL. I don't have access to shoot real far though. My drops are confirmed out to 910 yds. Depending on the savings I think I'd go with the 9 twist just to make sure.

IMO it merits a re-test when the rifle comes home. The 215 is nearly perfect for that size of case.

A 10" twist is adequate for the 230gr Berger and in my rifle the 215gr is at home with a 10" twist. It is stable well past sub sonic range.

Even a 11" twist is adequate for the 215gr Berger.

The 10 twist will stabilize the 215 but for optimal bc you should run a 9 twist. I would not even consider the 190 unless you can't get the 215 to shoot which I have yet to see.

Joseph, the action is an rr serial number action, the bolt has so much play between it and the action that the bolt won't even touch the ejection cam on the back. It wouldn't eject any hand loads

I will try 30 thousands off of the lands when the rifle comes back. At 3.6" I hit the lands, I thought about reaming the chamber, but the gun shot quite well with factory 200 gr hornady ammo.

Do any of you guys run the 215s at 3.6"?
If so what charge weights are you having the best luck with.

Try the Berger seating depth test. But 30 off has shot very good in multiple 300 Win Mags.

I would recommend doing a seating depth test with the Berger's before trying any further load development.

While doing my load development with the 215's things where looking so so then I did a seating depth test and found .040 off the lands shot a ragged one hole group.
