280 Ack Load Development Help

Thanks guys. I hadn't considered a runout issue.

I do have a couple #'s of H4831sc I could try, but I'm far from ready to give up on RL26. My range only has a 100 yard line, so I'd like to get close then take it to the field for longer range work.

:D

I haven't tried R-26 in my 280AI but have shot few 168gr/180gr VLD using IMR-7828ssc and Fed 215 primer.

I ended up using the 168 Classic hunter with IMR4831 worked the best in my Cooper my Kimber really liked 168 VLD using H 4831sc .

I'm running the 175 X's with 63gr RL26 and my gun seems to love it. I'm at 50rounds now and last 25 have been at woodchucks 700yds to 1100yds. Printed a 8" group on the steel plate at 1020yds. It's throated long for length of 3.5".

where did you start your loads at with retumbo? i am wanting to try it and h1000 with 168 LRAB and berger 180 hybrid options?

I started at 59gr's of retumbo, then went to 60gr's, then 60.5gr's, 61gr's, 61.5gr's, 62gr's, 62.5gr's and last 63gr's, that is considered a compressed load.
62gr was the load I ended up using. The fps was right around 2950.
A friend had good luck with IMR4350 and berger 168gr. None of my rifles have ever shot berger's worth beans.
Let me know what kinda results you get.

I just finished the load development in my first ever 280AI. I tried RETUMBO, 7828SSC, H1000, H4831, 7797, RL26 and H4831SC. All with 162ELDMs and 168ABLRs.

By far the H4831SC shines brighter in my rifle than any others listed above. I'm settling on either rem 9-1/2 or BR2 primers. They both seem to shoot about the same as far as accuracy and ES.

Since using 4831SC, I have not had a bad day and everything has been .5MOA or better with the exception of one group (.65MOA)

My second choice for this rifle would be H1000. Decent but not as good as 4831SC.

Regards,

M

thanks guys.

how were your velocities with h1000? I do have that option too. had been told 4831,7828,retumbo were popular options. rl22 shot good too but temp sensitive.

I'm working up some loads for mine with 140 & 168 VLDs with MRP and so far my best groups are .6s at .010 from lands.... I may have to try some H4831sc since everyone seems to do so well with it. I'm happy with velocity.....3200+ with 140s and 2950 with 168s but I'd sure like to get to .5 MOA or better!

Maybe I missed it but what twist is your barrel, the brand and length? I am surprised RL26 did not perform that well as others have really sung its praises. My 280ai with a brux 25 inch barrel just can't reach 3000 fps which is where I would like to be.

I meant to add with H4831SC powder. (Don't have my reloading data to remember the exact load.)
