World record group

While cleaning up some of my paper work I ran across this article and though I would share it with the membership.

On June 8th 2013 a match was held (NBRSA) in Denton Texas where the new world record was broke that stood for 40 years.

The shooter was Michael Stinnett and the group was .0077 for 5 shots @ 100 yards. (That equates to less than .008 thousandths larger than the .308 caliber bullet.

On this site, we talk about fast twist and long barrels and heavy bullets because of out sports needs.
This rifle almost had none of our requirements but shot an unbelievable group.

Here is the specifications for the rifle.
20'' 1 in 17 twist Krieger, Panda "Speedy Shorty" action, Larson stock, Leupold 45x Competition scope, Jewell trigger (One thing we do use a lot for our rifles) and a barrel Tuner (Weight on the muzzle end of the barrel for tuning the harmonics).

The cartridge used is a .30 Stewart using Lapua brass, 114 grain bullets and H4198 for the powder.

A front rest was used and Micro fiber bags were used to hold the rifle steady.

There are many contradictions to what we think is necessary for extreme accuracy, so It just goes to show that the rule is, (There is no rule) and we must remember that not everything is black and white.

Thanks for the post. I tried one of Vibration Simms barrel doughnut on a rifle. I started at the stock and moved it 1/8" at a time. I took a factory stock .223 Savage and was firing 1" groups at 300 yards.

Are you attempting to connect point blank PRECISION with long range ACCURACY?

When I started reading I figured the record was set with a 6PPC cartridge. Learn something every day.

When I read the article, I never did find out if he won the match he was shooting in. There is 5 target shot to win the match

What does precision pistol shooting at short range have to do with long range hunting? Could you hit a bullseye with that " rifle " and load at even 400 in a variable wind situation?

I'm struggling to understand your conclusion.
Are you attempting to connect point blank PRECISION with long range ACCURACY?

I am not trying to connect anything because the sports are so different. Just trying to keep an open mind about everything that is cast in stone.

I hear all the time that we must have a certain twist or the rifle wont shoot. We also hear that only extremely heavy bullets will work that have the highest BCs. We also tend to make all decisions based on 2,000.00 + yard performance and not the actual distance we can/will shoot.

I believe in keeping an open mind about everything and think out of the box when I can. so I just wanted to share this article about the accuracy and the difference in his equipment and ours. There is no hidden message here just information to think about.

Precision and accuracy are both important in my opinion and any way I can improve ether one is of interest to me. so I keep an open mind and listen to everyone young and old for little ways to improve the total performance of the rifle.

I didn't mean to start a debate, just though that a group that measured .0077 would be of interest to some.

Thanks for sharing JE. I guess the moral of this is don't underestimate the guy shooting next to you just because he hasn't got a PPC or whatever.

Wind is a condition that all shooters have to deal with when shooting at any distance and yes many good shooters could shoot a group at 400 yards or more if they were good at reading the effects of wind on there particular load and bullet combination.

Don't know where the pistol got into this discussion but many people have/can shoot there pistols at greater distances than 400 yards with 100% success and some scary groups.

One of the best groups I ever shot out of a specialty pistol at 300 yards was .437 5 shot group and conditions were not very good. There are many pistol shooters better than I am and with the right equipment
shoot much better than I can.

The point to the post is, We can all do better and we can always learn and improve.

PS: as one poster said "Never under estimate another shooter or his equipment".
