I think Skip is trying to say the same thing that I've been trying to explain to people. The ol' 30-06 is a wonderful round, as are all of the 06's relatives. My hero (Grandpa) has killed literally hundreds of deer with the good and trusty 280 remington. Let's face it, these cartridges have been around for a long time. Everybody is familiar with these rounds. I think that people try and explore more power and better economics, just like everything else in the world. So in answer to your question SkipAI, go big, and quench your thirst for newness and power. The 300 WSM, 300 WBY, 300 Ultra, 7 Ultra, they all sound good to me.

But just because you can kill a fly with a sledgehammer doesn't mean you should. Most of the replies were dropping subtle hints that for the range that Skip is shooting and the size of the game, it isn't necessary to go larger than .308.

A Sambar deer is hardly a fly. Some males are known to weigh up to 300 kgs and can grow to a height ranging from 135 - 150 cms at the shoulders.

53 to 59 inch tall deer, at up to 661 lbs, that's a pretty good sized deer. I think any rifle he chooses will be a great choice.

Well I have settled the debate on a .300WSM, I have a few choices on a rifle they are as follows:
Ruger All-Weather (s/s synthetic)
Browning Hunter (wood, blued)
And Tikka Lite Stainless, Its a hard choice but im leaning in between the first two, what do you think?
Yes, Sambar can certainly grow very large and are tough.
