yesterday my buddy and I tagged our bucks
Mine was small antlered 3x3 but huge body
my buddy's was big rack but smaller body
mine was at 299 ranged with my Tikka 6.5 creedmoor and prime 130 gr ammo,
buddys was 740 yds ranged with custom 300 prc and Hornady factory ammo.
wind was 10-15 at about 45 deg. The short shot was into wind and no mystery. Buddy's was more like full 45 deg Which explains the ham shot.
mine at 300 was a monster with small rack, his was big rack smaller body.
image is of the 4 bucks we got this season in western ND
on tailgate are heads from season, mine is 2nd from right, 740 yd is on right
i do not recommend prime ammo for hunting as it does not mushroom properly. My big one was a grizzeld old veteran with lots of scars and torn ears. Glad he went down quick!

For those cutting up deer in the field, get some wells Lamont cotton gloves or similar from home of economy or other and pull nitrile gloves over them. This will save your hands from freezing, my god it was cold.
havalon and gerber disposable knives were a godsend, used both- Kershaw gut hook was helpfull on gutting for one of the deer
if your carefull gut hook is not needed, just put your finger on the back of the blade and guide it up to the sternum. That said, a gut hook will make it easy Without a chance of the mess of a ruptured bowel.
get shoulder length gloves for sure they are cheap at $2-$3 and will keep your wrists clean and dry if nothing else.

I have had exceptional results with the factory Prime and reloads with the same 130 gr Golden Target. Lots of damage and great exits on 10+ deer here in Kansas. What was your muzzle velocity?

Great season, it would appear.
Worked a couple years in W-ND oil patch & I feel your pain with the cold comment.
Any wind measuring equipment used?

I use a BBQ glove set, the nitrile gloves are sized to fit over the liners:

X1000 on the Havalon. I can sharpen knives just fine, I love tuning up an Old Timer to where it slices paper like a razor, but the pure convenience of one knife that can be razor sharp on-demand at all times is amazing.
