Universal decapping die

Can someone explain what the benefit of using a universal decapping die is over a conventional FL sizing die?

For me since I anneal my brass after every firing, I want to deprime the brass with the universal tool, tumble/clean brass and anneal before resizing the brass…..not working the brass twice.

I usually decap 5.56 brass so I can put it in the tumbler and make sure the primer pocket is clean. Otherwise, I have to tumble it twice.

I decap and then clean brass so the primer pockets gets get cleaned also. I used to size before tumbling brass and scratched some dies from debris on the brass.

I didn't like the carbon and crushed walnut media that would accumulate on my press.

I deprime, wet tumble and then resize and load. My presses stay clean now.

I do the same, deprime first, then anneal before sizing.

Rifle brass: I decap, measure base to shoulder, anneal, toss in the ultrasonic, lube, FL resize to .001-.002 shoulder bump, load.

10mm brass: decap, ultrasonic, resize, load.

Gets the primer pockets clean, and (especially with the pistol brass)- keeps me from ramming dirty brass into the sizing die.

I load some dirty brass sometimes and I deprime then clean - that gets the primer pockets cleaned out nicely and keeps my dies from getting dirty brass issues...
Its an extra step but I can be pretty anal sometimes with my reloading...

The main benefit is to size clean brass preventing marring of the sizing die from dirty brass. It never made sense to me to clean brass with spent primers still in them, so I also use a universal decap as the first step in the reloading process.

I am using a combination of single stage for sizing and Dillon 550 for the rest. I have a universal decapper in the first position in 550 in case the tumbling to removing sizing lube left any debris in flash hole.

I decap on my old press so my main press stay clean. Maybe a little ocd but it makes me feel better that way.

I use a mighty armory decapping die- then anneal- easier to check shoulder bump, no bent decapping pin in my die…

I like to decap by itself to give me an idea of primer pocket tight-looseness so I can pay attention when I seat primers
