Twist rate/MV question with 105 Amax's, VLD's, 107 SMK's

Looking at building an 8 twist 6-06 and have been reading about the long target bullets coming apart before they hit the target due to excessive velocity/rpm. I was hoping for 3300-3400 fps with the AMAX or VLD, but am now second guessing my build as I don't want to deal with these kind of issues.

Anyone have any real experience with the target bullets at higher velocities and twist rates?

My dad is shooting the Berger 105 Hybrid Target out of his 6-06Ack.Imp. it has a Broughton 1-8 5c barrel and they shoot very well in it. He's not pushing them as hard as he could but if I recall they are launching right around 3450-3500fps.

He first tried the Berger 115's but found the 105 Hybrid Target shot better.

I know some that have 6.5 hot rods, have said they have prob's with the 130-140 bergers on impact at closer ranges. Haven't heard of any coming apart befor impact though.

I'd call Hornady, Berger etc and ask them directly about the max FPS/RPM limits on these 6mm bullets in question. I know that some of the guys I shoot with that run hot 6s have said that they've witnessed & had jacket separation around 3300 fps before on the bergers. So its def something worth checking on before you commit to building.

Not to hijack, but I'm soooo torn on this exact build and I can't find a reason not to do the 6-06 vs doing the 6mm Rem AI.

Its on a long action Win M70 so I've got the action length to make the 6-06 work just fine and dandy. Why would I want to go with the 6mm Rem AI?

Well with the 6-06 you have more case prep than the 6mm AI, you would need to neck down the 6-06, and both would need fire formed, so would be saving a couple steps in the necking process.

My brother had a 6-284. i do not know what other bullets he tried. the bergers reached the target about 60-70% of the time. Quite disappointing when you are in a match. .

Which Bergers are these that didn't make it to the target but 60-70% of the time???

Has he tried the new 105 Hybrid Target because they are working very well in my dads 6-06AI and they have the best BC of all the 6mm Berger bullets. In load development he was driving them well over 3600fps and they made it to the target just fine.

Shooting 105 vld in my 6-284 at 3250 with no problem and pushed them up to 3400 and they were all making it to the target. Same with 105 amax. And it's an 8 twist

Thanks Z. I spoke with Hornady today and was told 300,000 rpm was the max they recommended for the Amax. 3300 fps with an 8 twist spins just under 300k. So I should be ok with the Amax, as I don't plan to run more than 3300 fps.

The original berger VLDs, I think they call them 'hunting VLDs' now, would come apart right where folks are suggesting here. The newer 'target VLDs' have thicker jackets to address this specific issue, and apparently with success.

Good to know...glad they improved the jackets on those.
