Took the 20BR to +900!

Took the 20 BR out for some LR practice on saturday morning.

Set the gongs out at 575, 725 and 915. I've shot the 20BR out to 800 before but never farther. Was curious to see how she (and I) would do. Home-labeled turret only goes to 850 so the 915 required the use of my phone and ballistics app

575 and 725 went smoothly both first round hits within 2-3" of the bullseye. Then we messed around with my buddies 22-250 at those distances for a while. He was there for some trigger time and we spotted for each other which was handy. After a while i grabbed the 20 and dialed up to 16 minutes as per the phone app and gave the 915 yard gong a go.

First round provided a good solid thump, low of the bull. Well sweet... without making adjustments I sent another one down range, it landed just up and left from the first round. No it ain't a 10 round group or nothin' but for the coyote gun I'll take it! 2.25" @ over 900 yards, basically cold bore, from a lil' ol' 20 cal pill ought to do.

how big is that gong? doesnt look that big...how the heck did you even see it through a 14x scope? Congrats...that's excellent shooting!

Those little br cases dont pack a lot of wallup but they sure are consistent.

That one there is an 18" circle. Can see it pretty well really, even @ 10x like my buddy used to have to do it. 2 moa target roughly. I like to be able to see where I hit

Yeah that's stretching it a ways for the little guy. Although now to talk the other side of things...

If you think about it, the .204 cal 55 grain Berger has a G1 BC of .381 and it's going 3500 fps... pretty impressive. I've come across one article in particular about prairie dogs being taken at over 1000 yds with these same 55 grainers and a 20BR.

To compare to some .224 cal performers, you've got to find a cartridge that will push 22 cal 70+ grain bullets to ~3500 fps to compete with that lil' 20BR (But now I'm trying to compare apples and oranges). Not that it's impossible or hard to do in a 22 cal, just saying for a little guy the 20 does pretty darn good

Those little br cases dont pack a lot of wallup but they sure are consistent.

Accurate would be an understatement lol My dad actually built the rifle and used it for a couple years (albeit sparingly) before I got my hands on it for varmints.

My favorite story (and on my honor it's true) happened when dad had a customer over to break in a rifle on the 100 yard target in the back yard. Over the course of the shooting a spider kept trying to catch a few rays on the face of the cardboard. It was persistent enough that dad ran in the house to grab the 20. He clicked down from his 200 yard zero a bit and pulled the trigger, impact 1" low and the spider scampered away. Dad clicked back up an inch and waited, sure enough here he came again for some sun. This time after pulling the trigger a .204 hole appeared right where the spider had been. They both giggled like little school girls all the way to the target and found a partial ball of guts and legs at the base of the target (see picture) This post-it note is stuck on the wall in the gun shop between a set of bull moose antlers and a 350" bull elk ha ha

Nice. Love my 204's. I shoot the 39 sierra at 3900. Wish I had the twist to push a 55 berger. It would be an estimated 3750 if you take the normal formula of 50 fps loss per 5 grs.

20 cals are crazy accurate.

Might want to call Douglas barrels and talk to Stanley Taylor. He and one other guy compete in 1k comps with a 20 and do well.

I happen to have a .224 like that. Its a 22-243 with a 26" bbl shooting 75 grain Amax, with a G-1 BC 0f .435 at 3480 fps. It also shoots extremely well.

How far out you take her?

Was planning to try that bullet (or the 75 gr BTHP) in my buddy's 22-250 when he re-barrels it. (not with that kind of speed of course lol)
He's currently shooting the 53 gr V-Max @ 3500 fps and when compared to the 75 gr BTHP @ 3100 they have the exact same drop at 1000 yards Bet you're putting up some sweet numbers

I have a steel coyote that I have shoot at 925 yards in a gusty wind conditions average 17 mph. my 3 hot group was just under 8 inches. I was shooting prone using my jeep as a wind break. All 3 shots were within 1.25" vertically but strung out left to right a little bit.
