The Amazing 270 Win - revisited

These numbers are pretty impressive, I guess I better pick up a can of 7828ssc. My .270 likes imr4831 and 130 Accubonds @ 3150 fps. Can't wait to try it out.

Dang it Roy,

I just got it in my head to start work on my STW, and my 7mm RM, I just literally loaded up 40 rounds for my 270 Win last week and zeroed it, so I would have it for a hunt over the past weekend.

Just Monday I picked up some 7828 to use in the above mentioned 7mm's, and now you know I got to try it in the 270 also. Your killin me here. :D:D:D

Glad to see your still up and at it though. I have let my shootin take a huge slide over the last couple of years, just had too much other stuff taking up the time. Well that and the wonderful 100+ temps we have had over the past couple of springs and summers.

Carry on and post up some more goodies for us.

Re: The Amazing 270 Win - revisited - a year later

Got serious today and followed up on 7828ssc in the subject 270 Win.

Figured I'd do one of those latter tests. As I loaded some 140 VLDs w/59.1 gr 7828ssc last year I thought I'd start a bit lower and work up and validate the velocities I got previously.

All shots were at 300 yards using full length sized winchester cases and CCI 200 primers. Mauser action, Lilja 27" bbl.

The ladder test wasn't 'that' revealing though it indicated that a load below where I started the ladder would most appropriately work out.

Here's the powder weights and velocities.

57.9 - 3225
58.2 - 3247
58.5 - 3271
58.8 - 3285
59.1 - 3325
59.4 - 3262 ????
59.7 - 3332
60.0 - 3365

No bolt lift or extraction problems were experienced. The top two loads however showed shiny extractor marks.

I ran the above values through a spread sheet to determine a curve fit eq'n to calculate charge weights right around 3200 fps, as this rifle shoots exceptionally well at 3190 FPS.

While I was pondering this I kept glancing at the full can of PP 4000 MR. Hmmm research revealed that 4000 is in the same ball park as 7828.

There was still day light left so I loaded two rounds with 57 grains of PP4000MR with CCI 200 primers. If 4000 is in the same ball park as 7828ssc a MV of around 3200 was expected. Didn't turn out that way.

The two shots went into 0.75 MOA @ 300 at 3324/3357 FPS. No pressure signs no shiny spots on case heads. Hmmm, respectable....

My senses tell me that a 270 Win shouldn't be expected to exceed 3200 fps w/130 or 140 class bullets. It simply doesn't sound right.

I loaded two more @ 55.5 grains of 4000 resulting in velocities of 3241 and 3244. I liked that, a lot!

I made the hike to the target making my hike distance for the day something like 3300 yards for the day. I gotta get me a camera set up!:) But I need the exercise.

I was shocked out of my skivvies when I saw the POIs for those two shots. 9/16ths of an inch ctc. This rifle has shown a tendency to shoot really well when tuned with the RL-22 and Hornaday 140 BTSPs. Best group @ 100 (3 3hots) is 0.011". This two shot group is 0.1875 MOA @ 300.

Tomorrow will reveal the probability of duplicating the PP 4000's performance. weather is to be better with a lot less wind. :)

If this load proves out I'm gonna really regret giving this rifle to my son and replacing it with a 270 AM.:) Shooter says this load @ these velocities will do @ around 950 what the 270 AM will do @ 1k though with a bit heavier bullet.

We'll see.

W:)W! Those are very impressive mVs Roy! I must be doing something wrong as I don't even come close to your results. In comparison, here's what I am getting off my 30" Lilja 3-groove 1:8 barrel while fire-forming to .270 AI using 150gr NBT, Win brass, and WLR ...

60gr H1000: mV=3044; SD=11
60gr 7828SSC: mV=3130; SD=24
60gr H4831SC: mV=3194; SD=3

No signs of pressure thus far.

Thanks for sharing.

Roy, all I can say is WoW! My old 721 (original 24" barrel w/ good life in it still) may have some new food! I'm wondering how much I'd loose with the 24" barrel? Finding either of the two powders may be interesting...

Back in the day with the original Oelher chrono w/paper screens the ol' girl did 3190 w/N205 & 4350 w/a 24" Douglas bbl.

Since my earlier posts I discovered PP 4000 MR. Study said its similar to 7828. Learned, Not So. 55.5 br 4000 gave same velocity as 57 gr 7828ssc but with way better accuracy.

The cheap chrony said 3225 FPS w/low ES.

If it'd quit snowing I'd do the drops out to 900 and validate the velocity. I'm fairly confident it won't work out to 3200+

7828 groups at 200 are around 0.75 MOA, well under MOA.
4000 groups are about half of that.

Using CCI 200 primers.

Yea...love the April Snow Showers too!!! Typical Idaho. Keep us posted on your progress, and thank you! We appreciate it.

So how did the 4000-MR turn out? I've just started using some in 280AI and it's great. Now want to try it in my 270WIN LR rifle.

I'm shooting 165gr Matrix and 140gr SST with good results with a Benchmark barrel similar to the one Lucas Beitner got from them. Really do like it.

I only got a chance to briefly play with 4000 in my 270.. I plan to do more with it this summer. What I did see is that it does very good in speed and accuracy with 150s. The one run of 130s was just ok.
