Fellas, I'm heading to Idaho gmu 27 in mid September, the nearest town of Challis has a weather average of roughly 40 lowt to70 degrees high .I would like to have a rough idea what to expect at 3k more (7500)elevation in the back country for that time of year

Good luck with that:D

It was actually SNOWING in the high country here yesterday. I would be prepared for anything in that country. I would tell you that generally, you will have nice clear days with it being cold at night---into the low 30's and 20's. There is often early snow---sometimes it stays around, sometimes it doesn't. Man, I sound like a weather forecaster..............
Just keep an eye out for the updated local weather forecasts when you are there but as I said, you could have anything and just be prepared for it.

porkchop, Hunted between challis and Salmon 2 years ago. Was there in mid October. Camped at 8500ft. Hunted from 6500-9000ft. Temp ranged down to about 15-20 degrees on a couple nights, days were as high as 65 degrees. Got a foot of snowfall near the end of the trip from one storm above 7500 ft. Since you are going in September, I would think it would be a little warmer. Most mornings were chilly until you started hiking. Most of the time when hunting I was wearing north face hiking pants and a fleece jacket. Around camp I would throw on down jacket and pants, and let the other clothes air out. Saw some bulls hanging in other peoples camps during rifle season. Couldn't find one in the crosshairs. Good luck.

Did you see any deer, bear or wolf?

Did not see any bear or wolf. Missed a coyote. Counted over 120 deer over the 10 days or so. Antlers were hard to find. My buddy shot a forkhorn. Had a shot at a 4x4 on the last day, but I didn't have a tag. Found elk around 8500 ft, wish we had found some better areas to glass. Spent a lot of time hiking in areas with no vistas. Elk are there, but we came up empty. If cow tags were available in that area, we would have tagged one.
