Standard primers vs magnum primers in 30-06 using rl 26

The 06 doesn't need mag primers because of the powder volume but you could try with reduced loads and see the effect on SDs. I find a difference in cartridges that have 70+ grains of powder capacity.

A lot of people use them because they increase the velocity, but they can hurt the consistency in the SDs.

Sam at Panhandle Precision, if I recall correctly, uses magnum primers in his .260 Rem. I am trying both at the range this week in my Sako .260 Rem. Will be checking muzzle velocity and groups.

Just what I found trying both primers.

My 280 and 270 and 30/06s all shot better groups with the standard primers. (Could have been the powders that I was using).

The first big difference I saw was in my 7 STW. it was almost 50 ft/sec faster with the magnum primers but the SDs were not good at all (Over 20 ft/sec). with the standard primers, the SDs were .03 to .07. Again, this was with the powders I used in my loads and the results could vary from powder to powder.

I recommend trying the primer listed in the loading data and then try the magnum primers if you are not satisfied with the standard primers performance.

Depends on the temp. you are using your ammo in... If there's any chance you will be in sub freezing or especially sub zero conditions I'll stick a mag. primer in the load if it's a slower burning powder. My '06 is on a 215 with I 4350 and 165's, so I don't see why a mag primer would be a horrible choice for rl26. You may have to try a couple brands to get the load consistency you want.

Update
Done a 3 shot test increasing .5 gr
Started at 59.0 gr
180 grain interlock flat base bullet. F210 primers. Bullet ogive is 2.755
24 inch steyr with 10 twist.
This is my 0-300 yard meat gun in the woods of the south. I typically use 4350 but I'm out and I have a new jug of RL26
Wanted to see if I could get 1 powder for multiple guns. Any way.
Started out at 59 gr
59 gr 2634,2639,2615
Skipped 1.5 gr
60.5 2722,2720, crono graph didn't read
1/2 group
61 grain 2750, 2742,2755 3/4 in group
61.5. 2789,2769,2770 1/2-3/4 group
62 gr. 2838,2809,2819 1/2 group with 1 flyer
62.5 2824,2797,2782. 3/4 - 1 inch group
63. 2853,2850, 2855. 1/2 group

now I stopped there. I alway look real close at the brass for pressure signs. I noticed that I could see pressure signs here. Ejector marks and brass swipe. I further went back in the load and could see the Small progression of pressure signs. I found that 61.5 grain showed no signs of pressure. main thing about this is you could take all twenty or so shots and put inside 1 Moa group at 100 yards.

Didn't see any major gaps in speed so I'm thinking I'm ok with the 210 primers.
I'm eventually going to back off and redo these load with magnum and see what it produces. anyway just want to share.

So in conclusion. 30-06 load with reloader 26
61.5 gr 180 pill 2775-2785. 1/2 Moa. Out to 350 yard. When I tried pushing faster either by more powder or when I changed primer either way when I increased speed the group opened up. The sign of ejector marks at or around 63 gr gave me a little concern. Case fill was full. At end of the day this gun is a 0-300 yard so I'm happy. Ol gun shoots really good.

on a separate not ended up using rl 26 with 7mm lr accubond 175 grain. I ended up at 61.5 gr with magnum primer at 2835
1/2 Moa out to 400 yards. Tried to increase speed by powder increase but no real change with 1.5 grain incre to amount anything. When it did increase accuracy went down. Happy with both

how much did it change ur velocity by going to the magnum primers with the same charge.

None but I'm not saying that will be the same in your case. I backed off a little bit but ended up right where I was with the same MV as before.

update. For those interested.
Different gun 22 inch barrel 10t.
Working with 30-06 and 180 gr with primers. went to 63 grains with both f210 &f215
velocity between the two primers changed 25fps.
going to magnum primes cut my ES below 10 and SD to low single digits.
speed running 2780 FPS
temp 35 degrees

next outing may go up just a little more. No pressure signs thus far.
below is 100 yard group with a 35 year old factory winchester light weight that I use
not Bad for an old gun.

So between two different 30-06 both seem to like the RL26. One likes F210 and one seem to like 215 primers. But both seemed to like RL26.

look to be a 3/4 of an inch guns.

My 65284 shot good with rl26 and mag primers...
My test was using standard primers..and achieving same fps..

Resulted in using more powder with standard primers to get back to accurate speed with mags...

Just about 1.5gr more powder needed with standard primers..
ES & SD were close....
