I started out hunting with some buddies, trying to get into some elk with them. Then work was slow and next thing I was hunting hard. On day seven in a row I cut a griizz tack, 2 wolf tracks that turned to 4, and finally a cat track all going to my favorite ridge. Well I thought thats pretty crowded . But as I topped out at about 7500' I decided it is time to take my ridge back. I only saw 2 muley tracks, and ridge was littered w/wolf tracks. I have seen 20 + elk and same for muley on same hunt. I was beyond frustration. So next day I say I am wolf hunting. I hike in at daylght, which I rarely do and when I am in about 3 mile I look up this chute and a bull is feeding @ 840 yrd. I was standing in alders so I thought I could get a shot a bit up the chute, didnt work out.Now I am at chute and make a set up and what for 45 min. NO BULL. So I decide that since this is the only 6pt. I have seen all season to hike up timber to side where I should have good wind.I crunch out about 2000 vert. and I am in larch that was near his location and I SEE a small patch of elk fur, he is looking at me and I side step and shot through small hole in alder, off he goes. I follow him across a cliff, off which he doesnt make it and see his horn only down below about 20', that had to hurt. So my dream of shooting my bull @ 840 turned int a 50 yrd timber hunt. The hole from shot was fist sized from the 338 Norma,300 otm Berger. The shot was just under spine and mid body, traveled about 80 yrds, loosing copious amounts of blood.

Thanks guys. The wolfs are changing the game where I live. Been in fresh wolf tracks all week, but they area hard to catch up with in the mostly timber areas I hunt.

Man, the Norma stacked them up this season!!! I've been a day behind the wolves all season, hardly any snow hasn't pushed them down, back after them tomorrow gun)
