Shouldered Savage Barrel

I have a large shank target action that I want to rebarrel with a shouldered bartlein. The bartlein has a 1.250" breech and the large shank Savage action tenon is 1.125" which leaves .062" of shoulder per side. Is this enough shoulder? The barrel will be chambered in 6.5 CM.

BAT recommends a minimum 1.25" barrel shank for their 1.125" threaded actions. So I say you're good with that combination.

Great! Thanks for the info. The rifle currently has the factory 1" fluted bull on it and it's a hammer but...it needs to loose some weight. I'm going to order a bartlein heavy Palma contour and have it turned down and carbon wrapped by Chris at frozen fiber. He said he ought to be able to get the weight down to just over 3 lbs which is awesome. I was originally going to go with a proof sendero contour but the breech is only 1.20 which would not leave enough meat. I picked the heavy Palma contour as it looks to match up well with the proof sendero contour. It will also be cheaper to use the bartlein. The barrel will cost me 340.00 and Chris will carbon wrap and cryo treat for 300.00 with a turnaround time of 30 days or less. This puts me at 640.00 for the barrel which is about 150.00 cheaper than a proof. I will ha e Greg at bugholes do the treading, chambering and instillation of the barrel. Ought to be pretty sweet after it's done. I really like the target action and trigger on the Savage LRP.

FYI,
Bartlien will manufacture a barrel for you with a shank diameter larger than 1.25", at no additional cost. Call them up and ask them if they will keep the breech shank "as large as possible". Large as possible means the diameter that the breech first cleans up to run true in their lathes. When I ordered my barrel, they told me to expect a breech shank diameter around 1.290" to 1.300".

The blanks they use to manufacture their barrels with evidently come with diameters a little larger than 1.300". When the exterior is turned down to running true to center in their lathe, they typically measure 1.290" to 1.300" in diameter.

Oh..., this was for a stainless steel barrel. I can't speak to their CM barrel blanks. Best to talk with them to confirm what is possible.

My .338 SS Bartlein barrel has a breech shank diameter of ~1.303". I wanted a little larger than 1.25", which is the minimum recommended by BAT. Some gunsmiths feel the additional breech shank diameter is helpful to stable accuracy...

More good info! So, it sounds like it would be better to have the bigger breech. I wonder what the lead time might be on a barrel like this? The heavy Palma is in stock at OTM right now which would have saved probably 2 or 3 months lead time...But, I want to do it the best way possible and if that means waiting on a barrel with a larger breech, than so be it. I will be getting a stainless barrel not CM.

Yup. I don't speak with certainty on the value of the larger breach diameter. I'm confident it couldn't hurt rifle accuracy. Maybe talk with your gunsmiths (Chris and Greg) and get their opinions. Lots of rifles are built with 1.25" barrel shanks. So don't get too hung up over it. I just decided to go with the slightly larger shank and waited the 6 months...

Roger that. Greg said it "For a 6.5 CM I think the barrel (1.250 breech) will be fine but definitely don't want to go any smaller than that." I may just buy the 1.250" from OTM....6-8 months is a long time!!

1.200 on a large Savage would not bother me. Ever see the face of a Tikka action? About .050" shoulder. Your Savage would end up with about .040" Not something I personally would worry about.

Yes I have....very interesting...Don't know why it would be any different....but I'm obviously not a smith. I think I'm just gonna buy a 1.250" breech barrel that is in stock now in the contour I want, not wait 8 months for one and rock on.

It will be plenty. Make sure that the receiver face is square and the shoulder on the shank also, and buy a ground aftermarket recoil lug and it will be great. I do away with the barrel nut all the time to be able to go with the larger shank for big cartridges.

It would bother me. I don't even like a 1.200" barrel for a 1-1/16" thread. I have a new never fired 6.5 Creedmoor barreled action that has a 1-1/16" thread and a Bartlein barrel on it. I am considering having another barrel put on it because I don't like the width of the shoulder on the 1.200" barrel.

Well, i won't be using a barrel with a 1.20" breech diameter. So it really dosent matter.
