Savage Build 260

Get to pick up my new savage model 11 hunter 243 (cabelas special) to start my first build. I have been doing a lot of reading and research and think I am on the right track. I am going to stick with the 260(a caliber that I dont have) and try to get out to 600yards and if all goes well I will do another build next year to reach out to a 1000.

I am going to pretty much replace everything on the gun. I want to stay around 10lbs. This will be a target/hunting rig

Stock - Bell and Carlson Medalist
New recoil lug
New bolt handle
New Trigger
New Criterion Barrel (not sure which size/weight to get)
Dura Coat (not sure the color yet)
Laupa Brass - 200rounds
Barnes LRX (127gr) I have to go copper(try to push around 2800-2900fps)
Loaded with either 4350 or 4831. I have lots of different powders on hand to try if something works better.
Nikon 6.5-18

I know there is a wealth of knowledge and have been reading most it but if anyone has any pointers or suggestions that would be great.

Why not just get a savage in 260 and start burning powder. I have 2 ,a 260,and a 6.5x284.I'm shooting both of them at steel to 750 yards out of the box.One wears a Nikon 6-18 and the other a vortex 6-24 ffp. I mean I love tinkering with rifles as much or more than anyone but I'd rather burn powder.Just saying

Mooretitan, Jim @ northland shooters has a wealth of knowledge on building Savages and everything ya need. Does this give ya feel for what your going to be doing? 270 win 110 action turned into 270wby.

If you can't reach 1000 with that build then something is wrong. The .260 is a LR caliber (maybe not that far on game). I agree with the above post; just buy a stock savage in .260 and start burning powder.

My sav m10 Lh Predmax consistently shoots 1/2Moa.
700yds. is a breeze, 1000yds on a dead Calm!
I bought the rifle with intention of upgrading it but have yet to find a need to do so.
I am pushing it to the backup position for a bear hunt in a few weeks and am going to let the 300wm shine.

Paperwork has been filled out and I get to pick everything up on 5/22. Really excited about putting everything together. The reason for not just getting a standard savage in a 260 is that I have always wanted to do a build and I only have 350 in the rifle and i will probably use the scope on my kids 10/22 so really for $250 for a new action is prefect. I hope to learn a lot from the build.
The reason for the 260 is I have other calibers that can reach a 1000 yards but nothing in a 6.5mm seems like the 260 will be a great caliber to learn with. Good brass and bullet selection, light recoil, easy to load for, good barrel life and it is something that if I grow out of it my kids can start shooting with it. My 300 rum might be a little much for them

I hear ya, I love my 260. It is hard to beat for a easy to shoot rifle that has long range ability and is suitable for most north american game. My next build will be some sort of big 7or 30. I am hoping this up coming bear hunt will reveal what my rifle needs are.

I just finished my build....Stevens 200 in .243 was the parent rifle, I know have a 7-08 w/26" shilen barrel, boyds stock, and SAV-1 trigger. I bedded the action and slapped a Vortex HS-T 6-24 on it. So far, I've been able to shoot .75 MOA at 100 yards...but am still working up loads for it.

Talked to Jim Briggs the last couple of days and placed an order today.

Shilen Stainless Select Match 1-8 twist 260 with new lug and barrel nut, plus a Rifle Basix Sav 1 trigger.

Going to put it into an H-S Pro Series 2000 stock. (black with gray web)

Should have everything around the time I pick up the gun. Hope to get everything finished up and on paper in June.
