Rem model 7

I've Just aquired a rem model 7 and I was wanting to rebarrel it to a varmint contour and a local gunsmith told me that the model 7 action is to light and weak to ever be able to shoot... I was wanting to know if anybody has ever built a long range rifle off of that action and how it shoots!! Any help appreciated

I'm wanting it in 260 rem

I would find another gunsmith! I have a model 7 with a varmint contour bbl in 6mm rem that shoots great!!

I forgot to add that the Model 7 action is the same exact diameter and features of the the 700 short action, but is 1/2" shorter in length. I would say you could make an argument that it is actually stronger.

That smith needs to quit smithing.... I had a custom .308 built on a model 7 that would absolutely drive tacks. It had an M24 take-off barrel cut down to 20" finished length, and no joke, if I did my part, it would shoot 1-hole groupings @ 100 yards. It was built for 1K shooting. My smith had one that he built, that he shot (and won) a BUNCH of 1K comps with.

If he tells you a Model 7 is too weak to shoot non-magnum short-action cartridges with, go find another smith....PERIOD.

I agree.

I built a 6-284 off a M7 action a few yeas back that shot flawlessly. Gun was built by MCR.

You need to go find a GUN SMITH. The PERSON you talked with doesn't have a clue.

If you're anywhere near the south, look up McCullough Custom Rifles. Jimmy McCullough is my gunsmith. He's an old guy who's been smithing his whole life. The man is literally world renowned for his abilities. He's built rifles for Carlos Hathcock, Chuck Mawhenny, and ALOT of famous snipers... As a matter of fact, the barrel that was on my Model 7 came off of Chuck's M24 he bought...said it wasn't accurate enough. LOL Then it got stolen in 2008. I got to know him 11 years ago when I worked at the outdoors store. He would come in all the time. He's a great guy who has forgotten more about guns than I'll ever know. People talk crap about Douglas barrels, but he knows the owner VERY well. He knows Boots Obermeyer (5R rifling inventor), and just about everyone in the business. They are the #1 barrels he recommends, and I trust his word over anyone else I know! He'll tell you straight up, you can buy a $800 barrel blank if you want, and he's put alot of them on in 50-60 years in the biz...But he'll tell you that the most honest company, and best shooting barrels are Douglas. And I've owned one of his rifles...So for me, I trust him 110% when he says something.

My wife shoots a Mod 7 in 300 WSM!

I cant imagine any competent Gun Smith telling you the action isnt strong enough!
BTW- she has killed Bison, Moose, Caribou and 3 bears with it!gun)

You need to do one of two things with this "Gunsmith".
1: DRUG TEST HIM
2: send him back to grade school

I gave McCollugh custom rifles a look he's about 3 1/2 hours from me I really appreciate the info ill be finding another smith
