Hi fella's so I just picked up an older 30/06 Rem. 760 carbine with 18.5 inch barrel made in June 1965 from what I can gather. It's 95% condition one small scratch on the barrel. Question is have any of you fellas reloaded for one of these and if so what powder and bullet combo seems to work best?

My buddy has one that's from the early 70's in .270 that he wants me to work up some 130 Accubond loads for. We haven't started on it yet, but when we do I can post up our results.

Thanks Mudrunner. I might hunt with this one this year if I hang close to the creek or swamp. I figure that 18.5 inch barrel would be handy in close cover. But what do you think a fast burning powder and a 180 gr. bullet out of that short barrel ?

it's been years since I loaded for these , mine and Dads are not the short bbl carbines . I loaded IMR4064 and Dad used 180 hornady round nose , I used hornady 165 soft point .

Try a Berger 185 VLD and Varget, CFE223, LeverEvolution, 4350, or 4831 would all work.

I used one for my first ten years of hunting starting in 65'...great rifle, slick, fast and clean.. I used rcbs small base dies and a B/M straight line seater...I used 150 nosler partitions sitting over why of course H-4350 and the 760 was a lot more accurate than people think, mine would shoot 3/4 inch groups all day long. I remember it had the standard 3x9 leupold..killed a ton of whitetails with that rifle, miss her, wish I still had her ...

Yeah, I've hunted with all the big magnums and other assorted calibers now I'm getting to the point were I like a more older traditional rifle to hunt with and this Rem. 760 fits the bill.
I've got a few months to play around with it so I'll try some of your and other suggestions that get posted here, thanks.

Bought one in 1971.My first hunting rifle.Best load in it is 56 grains IMR 4350 with a 165 gr bullet. With Sierra 165 bt I have taken deer .bear and pronghorn It has shot one hole groups many times at 100 yards

Is there a gun cabinet made of wood in the state..old timer..that doesn't have a 760 or two in them, NO...these young whippersnappers with metal safes have missed the boat on this classic PA deer killin' machine..I remember back in the 60's and 70's when 95% of the hunters carried one and that's when we had a million hunters ! I remember one old buck who had one in .244 that would shoot 1/2 groups all day long with a standard 3x9 Leupold on it...760, a true classic big game rifle !

I bought one a couple years ago, wasn't the prettiest thing in the gun world but I was mainly interested in the action. Took it apart and cleaned it up real well and curiosity got me so I had to shoot it.... besides the sore shoulder it shot terrible! me being me I had a challenge now lol. I ended up floating the barrel and bedded the action and well added a decelerator recoil pad to save the shoulder :) ran some 175SMK's since I have a mess and the rifle would print well! wouldn't shoot anything under 165 for some reason but the 180gr GameKings WOW! 3 shots and while you can see 3 holes they are all this pretty little cloverleaf at 100 yards, I can't get the pic to prove it to work BUT H4350 seemed to work the best for me.

Little ol' turd rifle shoots so well I went off and ordered a pretty stock that I work on when I have time and hope one day to have this project completed and have figured out how to load pics by then so I can show it off. Awesome rifles and lots of folks don't know much about them. Later,

Kirk

I think you're confusing the 760 with a bolt-action rifle... Because the 760 is a pump-action, and there is no way to float the barrel or bed the action on it...

Here's one I found on google...
