Reloading Question. Change Brass

Worked up a nice load for my 270 WCF using Federal Nickel brass. Those cases were near the end of the line, as the primer pockets were becoming enlarged.

I switched over to new Hornday brass with no other changes to my load. The velocity dropped from 3000 fps all the way down to 2850.

I understand a change in any component can affect the load, but really? That's a drastic drop in velocity, reading up on it seems a case with more internal volume will lessen pressure & reduce the velocity. I expected a bit of a change but not that much of one.

Start running up the powder.
Just know, Hornady brass kind of sucks. But not much more than Federal. So you might not be too disappointed.

That is why you should back off a bit when changing any component. Imagine if the change had been +150fps instead of -150fps. I will typically back off 5% and load a few to test pressure out.

I was surprised at the durability of that 40 pc of Federal Nickel brass, that stuff held up better that I thought it would. It came from a batch a guy gave me of 1X fired factory ammo. Always believed it was the softest brass ever.

I like Hornday brass ok, guess I'm not as decerning as some of you guys.

Nickel plated is harder. Hornady is softer.

Be careful with Hornady brass. You'll lose primer pockets quick with max loads.

I had that problem with my last batch of Nosler brass as well. After this Hornady is done I'll get better stuff. Starline most likely or ADG, Peterson if I'm feeling rich

I bumped up 1 full grain of powder & replaced the bullet with the 130 Accubond. Will check POI & velocity then take it hunting
