easiest way to know would be to call them and ask and see why they would say it is not a good idea. and if I remember right they say only the S.S. forend and chamber end

Sure, why not? They paint carbon stocks all the time.

Aerospace does it too. Rotor blades, skin panels....although they use some confidential stuff (pixie dust). You might want to check and see which paints work best or call the barrel maker for tips. Once that stuff is cured in the autoclave process, paint away.
