Powder/Bullet Choice 270 Win

gotta love the 270, H-4831SC for me. Some day I've been meaning to try the 150 gr Berger VLD. I say it will probably do anything these 6.5-284's will do, no dis-respect intended...

Just the other day I had tested 61 grains H4831 SC and Nosler 150 gr BT, they grouped great 1.2"@300 yards, I even had a chance to clock them with chrono ;-) It read 2250 fps:cool: and the guy next to me shooting muzzleloader clocked his lead balls at 4000 fps :D , but I was 3.8 MOA from 100 and I was dead on @ 300

I think your numbers are wrong. May want to check that.

2250 for a 270 and 4K for a muzzle loader?

Tank

I know, that's why I disagree on the speed, according to ballistic calculator, drop at 300 should put it in 2900 fps, shot was made with 7 degree angle uphill.

4851 is definitely old standby... I think I'm gonna go with R22 and 7828 in search of better MVs. May as well take advantage of a lengthy tube. What say you??

Tanner I have both a 26 inch 270 win and a 29 inch 270 and 270 ai I use imr 7828 ssc with mag primers R-22 is also good.

Something was way, way, way wrong with his Chronograph. Either that or he was putting you on something awful.

I'm not sure that 4000fps is even possible with a Muzzle loader.

It was 3.8 MOA or 12" drop from zero at 100 yards, that's 2900 fps @ muzzle by any ballistic chart. I think chrono was to close to a muzzle like 2 - 3 feet, I even blew front screen with muzzle blast :D
and the guy with smoke pole had flintlock musket and was using real black powder...

My 270 Win sported a Douglas 24" then a Lilja 27". The Douglas pushed 130s at 3200 with 3/4 MOA average accuracy over several decades. The Lilja runs 140s at 3200. N-205 and 4350 were used in the Douglas. RL-22 in the Lilja.

RL-22 drops on the order of 130 FPS from summer to winter in Idaho. Thus I load for winter.:D
