PacNor Rem Nut?

Anyone use them? I know people think it's sacrilege to put a Savage nut on a Remington action. They don't look that bad to me and the rest of the Rem action certainly looks better than a Savage in my opinion. Wondering how often you swap barrels and how well they go back to same POI and similar head space?

I've used this system on about 10 rifles. used both Bergara and Mcgowan, sorta like the Mcgowan type better as it's easier to get the nut tight when headspace is "right".
I don't swithc bbl's, just build another rifle in cal. I want.

It's cheaper and more simplistic just to have your smith pin the recoil lug onto the action, and headspace and proof mark each barrel, so when you line up the barrel's proof marks you know you're at proper torque and headspcae. You'll have to do that with with the other way, too, except with a pinned recoil lug, you only need an action wrench and a vice.

If you go the pinned lug route, you also don't have that fugly Savage ring on the front of the action... It looks 100% factory Remington on the outside.

No way I'd ever put a Savage part on a Remington...I'm too much of a purist.

the first gun board I ever joined was on AOL close to twenty years ago. There was one guy who did some experimenting with a Rem. Mod. 40 take off barrel. He actually made his own barrel nut that was similar in shape and design to the current barrel nut. Of course the doodle bugs laughed at him! But he consistently shot better groups than most anybody else. The following winter there were two more barrel nut Remingtons in that group, and each one shot better than the conventional design. They had a mail in postal match with all groups judged by Joe Barnes and another guy. The rifle that won was a full bore custom action rifle in 6PPC (Stole action that had been modified extensively with a Hart barrel). It shot groups in the very low two's and maybe a couple in the ones). The next four or five were Savages and one of the Remingtons. In the factory class group the top five or six were Savages with the exception of a Winchester Mod. 70 (I still think the guy had a custom barrel by the way). In the mix were at least one Mod 40 Remington, and several other brands. That was a couple years before Pacnor started to offer the option, and when they did several others in that mix of about fifty to sixty guys jumped on the band wagon.

That was about the time I got my first Savage (112BV-s in 22-250). It wouldn't have won the modified class, but would have placed in the top three or four right out of the box. It would have been one or number two in the out of the box class, even with the scope issues I was having with the Burris I was attempting to use. That rifle was stolen in a home invasion, so I never go to seriously find out. (the rifle that won the factory class shot quarter inch groups with a .223 in a 112 Savage). Looking at the results; every center fire action that won or placed in the top four had a barrel nut with one exception.

Now I have a Mod. 700 short action in .223 NM with a .246 necked chamber. Shoots mid fours with a classic Remington quality barrel. I'm going to rebarrel it sooner than later in .223NM with a .244 neck. I'll also do a .222NM with a .246 neck at the same time. Both barrels will use a barrel nut!

I had a professionally built model 7 with a factory Remington 700 Varmint .308 barrel that was worked, lapped, trued, crowned, and fitted, in an HS Precision Pro2000 Varmint stock, with a Jewell trigger in it. That rifle would literally shoot 1 ragged hole 3-shot groups @ 100 yards. When I say 1 hole, I mean it looks like you shot it one time, then missed the target completely with the other 2. It was insanely accurate. And that was with factory Hornady TAP 168 BTHP Match (red box LE ammo). I don't know what class it would shoot in, but the only thing aftermarket on that gun was the stock and trigger. Everything else was factory Remington parts that had been trued up.

That rifle was stolen back in 2008 when some a-hole ransacked my shop. I'd just about give anything to have that rifle back.

they got that Savage and two 6mm Remingtons. The 6mm's were Rugers, and one was finally shooting pretty nice groups (mid to high threes). The other was a standard hunting rifle.

That postal shoot was a five target with five shot groups on it. The targets were supplied by Joe. Anyway I got shot down before I ever got the chance to get started in that shoot! But also know in the back of my head that I wouldn't have won. That guy with the .223 seriously had that rifle dialed in. The guy with the Stole just kinda dropped off the planet, and have not heard or seen anything from him in 15 years. It was fun! I should have gone ahead and entered the 22 rimfire class, as I'd have won that one going away with my 541. I was of course in a serious funk at the time.

I just put a Criterion 7mag barrel on a Remington 700 action with a barrel nut. It was fun to do. I don't plan on switching barrels but it seems to work well. There are quite a few people out there doing this now.

It is intended to be my 'switch' barrel for playing with .284 Winchester variants.

My gunsmith installed the barrel in about 5 minutes. THAT'S WHAT'S COOL.

I just put a Criterion 7mag barrel on a Remington 700 action with a barrel nut. It was fun to do. I don't plan on switching barrels but it seems to work well. There are quite a few people out there doing this now.
