Need help with 270 Wby load

I've had good luck with IMR 7828 with 130 SST and Interbond, and 140 Berger. 130's run 3450-3500 ish, 140's- 3330. 26.5" bbl, standard weatherby freebore chamber. I'm shooting a pre-64 win mod 70 and my mag length limits me to 3.350 OAL. RL 22 and RL25 were both accurate with 130's but not as much speed as 7828. 7828 was a breeze finding a fast accurate load with the 140 berger. WBY brass and Fed 215M primer used throughout. I have a couple 257 wby's but actually prefer the 270 wby to them. I haven't tried any other bullets but can't see why the 150 berger or any of the accubonds (130,140, 150ALR) wouldn't work great also. MY 140 berger loads shoot in the .4's at 100 when I'm steady behind the scope.

My loads for the Weatherby MKV ultra light weight rifle:

Norma brass, necksized, trim to 2,540
Fed 215 large rifle mag
Barnes 130gr ttsx
Norma MRP 72,8 gr
Coal 3,285
Run out less than 0,002
MV 3440

Three shot group size is 1/3 - 1/2 inch at 100m for the two first rounds, the third round will always, from a heated barrel group within 1inch.

You might also try VN560.

Anyway take a look at the reloading data at Norma.se, Barnesbullet ( for coal ), Lapua for Vithouvari

Forgot to mention and recommend John Barnsness article on the subject, reloading the weatherbys, seating depth and so on, in the september issue of Gunsmagazine, go to digital editions september issue page 18 ( its for free)

I use retumbo and the 150 gr nosler long range accubonds. 74 grains at 3.360 and I've got 1" groups at 200 yards. I will say one thing though. This rifle is the most finicky gun I've ever owned. It took 7 different bullet and 6 different powder combinations to finally get it to shoot. I bet I shot over 200 rounds before I got to this load.

Not a fan of Barnes Bullets as they copper foul the heck out of my barrel. That being said, every factory chambered Weatherby I've owned liked the Barnes TTSX's seated deep. I would start at 3.28 and work your way deeper.

As for powders, I agree with the others..IMR-7828 is the way to fly with the 270Wby. It typically gives top speed and best accuracy. In addition, junk the 140 and go with the 130TTSX.

FWIW, Weatherbys ARE NOT hard to load for. They're just like any other case, but with a belt. Also, head space off the shoulder and not the belt. Usually bumping the shoulder .002-.003 is all that's required.

Good luck with your endeavor. The 270 Weatherby is capable of superb accuracy, especially for such a high intensity cartridge.

Do any of you have any experience with the 150gr bergers match grade hunting vlds in 270wby?

I loaded up 12 rounds yesterday, coal 3,300-3,295-3,290, mv on average where 3350, tried them today, but won't group any better than 2inches on average.

The rifle is a customized Sako AV, Shilen match grade bbl, 27inch. Its shooting Hornady interlocks into 3/4inch at 200m. But I have had no luck with boattail bullets in this rifle so far.

Should I seat deeper or longer?

Or try my box of 150gr long range accubonds?

I'm working up a load for cross canyon - need to be good for 650meters.

1 in 10

Weatherby chamber specs

Vn 560 71,5 grains

Fed215 magnum match primers

Remington 7mm Weatherby mag brass, necksized to 270, rcbs die

Forster bench rest micrometer seater die

Bullet run out < 0,002

Any chance you could change to 570 and slow down to more like 3150fps range. OBT node is closer.

I know little about Vn powders but 560 seems fast compared to my favorite for 270Wby, IMR-7828. 570 is slower but fills the case better than 560.

Also, how far from the lands are you?

I don't have access to the imr-7828, but I have available both the N165 and the N170, and also the H-1000.

Will try the N170 with 75gr, did work with Hornady SSTs setated to coal 3,34 earlier. Cannot get any Hornady amax or sst which have been out of stock here in Norway for almost two years now.

I'll measure the distance to lands and will report back.

N170 is definitely more the appropriate speed. Better case fill.
H-1000 is there too but we never tried it. My 270 became a 338/300 RUM. I don't have access to the other 270Wby at the moment.
