starting the break-in process of my custom 338 rum. 27" Lilja 1-10 twist. Using a basic Shooting Chrony to record data and shooting at about 4000 feet elevation. Graph is 10-12 ft away.

86.0gr H1000 3.580" COAL 300gr Sierra Matchkings

1 - 2662 FPS
2 - 2691 FPS tad fast I thought...
3 - 2622 FPS
4 - ERROR
5 - 2635 FPS

Big extreme spread on first 4 shots.

87.0gr H1000 3.580" COAL 300gr Sierra Matchkings

1 - 2673 FPS
2 - 2711 FPS
3 - 2725 FPS
4 - 2681 FPS
5 - 2711 FPS

extreme spread better on this 5 shot group, not great yet.

88.0gr H1000 3.650" COAL 300gr Sierra Matchkings

1 - 2717 FPS
2 - 2722 FPS
3 - 2705 FPS
4 - ERROR
5 - 2730 FPS

extreme spread better again on this group. I can live with this. Would like 2750 adverage but its just a number.

Anyone have any results similar? I thought this was a tad fast but alot of my S&W 44 magnum and Glock 10mm handgun loads do match the manuals data I use. Hodgdons site and my loads do not match well... I was thinking they used a 24" barrel for testing. I like the 300gr pills and would like to keep using them. I just think SIERRA'S testers where on crack posting 92+grains with H1000/300gr pills using stock 3.580" COAL!!!!!! NO WAY! I was getting slight crunch at 87.0gr on factory COAL. I tried a slow powder trickle aswell. Im no reloading guru but I'd hope someone has some feedback or knowledge to share.

thanks!
Mike

My favorite in 338 ultra has been RL25 Velocity at 2770 fps with a 26 inch barrel and mag length 3.690 RL33 will run even faster around 2850-2900 so I will be switching to the RL33

One thing I was wondering is why are you seating the bullet so deep? Go as long as the Mag will allow you too. On a rem 700 that is usually about 3.690. I really don't use H1000 anymore for me it was just too inconsistent lot to lot.

I've read about H1000's lot issue. I had great results with my Edge a few years ago being stable v.s. Retumbo. I'd love to try RL33. Hard to find locally so im sure I'd have to order online a few pounds or a 8lb jug if its avalible.

I am gonna go with a 3.680" and 89gr. to see how she does. I'd like it to be consistant.

Try this Mike,

If you have a hornady coal gauge, use it to see where your touching the lands. Load your rounds so they "just" fit in the mag. This will give you more room, and it might even give you the room to make a positive turn on your loads. I did this with my 338 rum, however I'm shooting the 265 LRX bullets and 7828 ssc with excellent results. Seems to be a really great load.

Good luck in your quest!!

Jayson

I am loading my 338 rum to 3.670 with 300 gr berger otm in front of 90 gr of H-1000 and it is yielding 2850 fps confirmed in drop to 1250 yds. This is a pretty hot load in my gun and my primer pockets aren't lasting a real long time. I had a bunch of Federal nickel brass and it is very soft and the primer pockets are getting loose after one firing. I also have quite a bit of factory federal ammo loaded with 225 nos accubonds and they are a bit hotter than advertised, but not as hot as my handloads. The biggest difference is the C.O.L. Seating the bullet out further drops the pressure and allows more powder. My barrel is a broughton 5c with a 9.3 twist, and it could have something to do with the velocity. I would like to try some Rel 33 to see if there is a little more on the table though.
My buddy has a factory remmy xcr and gets right around 2700 with 91 grains of H-1000 and sierra match kings. We have shot side by side and he has to dial in quite a bit more elevation than me.
The berger otm's don't seem to be sensitive to seating depth. I picked a length that was the longest that would feed as a repeater in my action (single shot is no good when hunting in the land of the grizzly)
