We had a group of hunters here for sagerats and spent one day on rockchucks. All but one went over 500 yards. One was taken at 899. They were rockin' some pretty nice hardware. The guns ran the gamut from a .20BR shooting 55 grain Bergers to a .300 RUM Imp launching a 210 grain VLD. Most of the rifles were 'smithed by Cody Farr of Cody's Custom Guns who was also one of the shooters. I had a nice day spotting for the group. No Off Season.

Good looking hardware. In that 500-900 yard range, are you seeing glass, or calibers that seem to standout from the pack?

Very very nice. One of my favorites pastimes. As my significant other says, "I can't believe grown man can do this kind of thing."

There were a wide variety of cartridges represented but at 500 to 600 yards, all of the rifles worked well. There was a significant difference in the amount of damage to the 'chucks. Part of that was due to the size of the animal. The little .20 BR with the 55 grainers has a nice BC of around .500 but without a doubt it will run out of steam at the longer ranges. But, solid hits killed 'chucks just like when hunting anything else.

Randy: I know what you mean. It's hard to understand until you've had the satisfaction (and heartache) of trying LR 'chucks. It jacks me up to see a hit at LR whether it's mine or someone else's. :D

Awesome!
Definitely one of my favorite ways to spend a weekend in eastern Oregon:D

Here's one I got the last time out at 635 yards. All he would offer was from the shoulders up. That's all I needed. We got another one at 785 yards the same day with my XP-100 chambered in 6.5 X .284 slinging 142 smk's.
Great shooting guys!

Mike, that is one **** good looking pistol. And a great marmot blaster to boot.

Randy

Yeah, fantastic looking hand cannon!

Here is a friend with my current favorite chuck getter...

Thanks guys,

Tim,
That's a good looking rig that your buddy is toting. Details please:D

This is another one of my chuck busters. XP-100 chambered in .243 WSSM. 1-8 twist barrel, McMillan stock, PTG fluted bolt, with Leupold glass. Running 105 gr Berger VLD's @ 2900 fps. Longest confirmed hit with this rig on a chuck was 1017 yards. Hope to extend that PR this yeargun)

Nice, Rogue. My rig is similar except that it does have a stock. :) It's an eight-twist Krieger .243AI on a 700 with a Kampfeld bolt, Jewell trigger, A5, YHM-3300-ti can and a NF 5.5-22X. My longest 'chuck with it is 1030 but, then again, it does have a stock! gun)Maybe we should have a LRH Rockchuck Rendezvous??

Tim,
That's a well thought out set-up. The 6mm's with the high BC bullets are tough to beat without burning a lot of powder in a much larger chambering IMO.
On the subject of a LRH Rockchuck Rendezvous.
I would be down for that. I'll bring an arm load of xp-100's along, and see if I can make a convert out of you.:D
We are heading over to Paisely Memorial Day weekend with all the kids and their fiance's, girlfriends, and buddies for our annual jack rabbit hunt.- I do carry a rifle for that.gun)
Would be nice to drop in on you one of these trips while we pass through Lake View and make a connection.

Randy,
Was out a couple of weekends back with a buddy that grew up in K-Falls. He has lived in Washington the last twenty years. He came down to visit his folks, so we went out and smoked some rock chucks. He too went on and on about how much he loves S. central Oregon.

Here's another XP-100 in 20 VT. Longest shot with this one so far this year has been 512 yards....
