Long throated 30-06, 284 winchester/shehane or 280 ai for a 18-20" suppressed long action.

I'm a dirty sl*t for lapua brass and am struggling with analysis paralysis. Bore volume vs short fat powder columns vs no trimming. Have a defiance long action so trying to milk performance. Help.
I like more volume in short barrels, 280 AI with Peterson brass is my recommendation.
I've found that whatever velocity advantage a cartridge has over a smaller one at 24-26", translates nearly identically to short barrels in the 16-20" range.

Curious what others will say..... I wanted to build my daughter a shorter barreled 280AI for a all round hunting rifle but in the current shortage of brass, dies, and factory ammo, I'm really considering just doing a 30-06 Serengeti so she never has to worry about finding ammo later.

30-06, throated for 180HH or even the 166HH that will provide the extra velocity especially with faster powder. I topped 2900fps 180HH with W760 in 22" 700ADL stock rifle for my son and is extremely accurate. Added freebore gives you options. Curious, what is the magazine COAL?

+1 for the 30-06 Serengeti.

Best expansion ratio in a short barrel, best sellection of components, and loaded ammo available in a pinch.

I would consider 30-.284 if hamstrung by magazine length, but no reason to go that route with a true long action.

I chambered a 28 inch KBI 30-06 with Serengeti reamer. 215 Hybrids with either RL-17 or N560, 2800 fps is easy button.

I got to just under 2700fps with the 215s out of my 22" '06. Too much of a good thing for me, though - that rifle weighs 7.5lbs all up.

...maybe I'm just 'sensitive' 😜

151 absolute hammer going 3230fps in my SAAMI chamber 30-06, factory tikka 22" barrel. It's hard on lapua brass but can get 4 firings at least, have not tried beyond that but pockets getting loose.

I would suggest 7mm-08AI or the like.

20-22" with 150 or 160 class bullets.

I am looking at a 7SAW personally.

This bone stock new 7mm-08 is shooting 150ELDX very well at 2750fps & I suspect it will speed up a bit as the barrel breaks in.
