I always thought weatherby threw the 6.5-300 together as a " here ya go" to the 26 nosler not realizing what a fricking lazer beam they just created

My 6.5-300 I had built in the early 1990s:
Remington M700, everything trued up/squared up, Sako extractor
Canjar set trigger
30" Hart barrel, .920 at the muzzle
Metal work by Sid Goodling in PA
Sheehane "Tracker" laminated stock, inletted, bedded & oil finished myself.
Kelbly rings on Davidson bases, aligned to zero the scope at mechanical center and glass bedded in place
Leupold 6.5-20x-50 Vari-XIII converted by Premier Reticles to 8.5-26x, with dots tailored to my 140 grain MatchKing load, with 3/8 MOA dots from 200 to 1,000 yards
Shot 1/4-3/8 moa with 140 Matchkings and 120 Ballistic Tips

That's my integrally suppressed (AAC 'Cloak') 10/22 with a 4.5-14x mildot laying there.

Later put it in an HS Precision varmint style stock and terrorized the deer and groundhogs with it. Note how much the stock had to be hogged out to accommodate the barrel.

Always enjoyed shooting with Sid at Williamsport. He built my cousins 6.5-284. We lost a great smith when he passed away.

weatherby didn't have to do anything really. It was all already out there before Adam was born probably.

I listened to a podcast from Weatherby about this cartridge. It was originally tried in 1959, but was not successful due to lack of suitable powders.

Yes N570 is good but I am finding US869 is better. Much better velocities

This gun was originally built back in the late 60's or early 70's by my great uncle to shoot 1k at Williamsport, Pa. It's an accursed 700 action with what I believe to be a Douglas barrel. I had used the action to build another benchrest rifle and just recently had it put back in its original configuration. I did replace the lost Remington solid wood stock with the laminated Boyds stock. Boyds really impressed me with this stock. I also put a Wyatts extended magazine in it.

I was born and grew up in Williamsport. Several of my friend's fathers started the 1000 yd. club. They were shooting the 6.5 x 300 Wby. in the early 60's. One of the early gunsmiths (local barber) lived next to my high school. His son and daughter shot deer at long range every year. I graduated in 1962. Some of the men shot on my sisters farm. Nice to see Hoyer, Keiser and several others getting recognition.

Nice looking rifle. Does Pac-Nor have the KS Magnum contour programmed or did you use a different contour?

One of the early gunsmiths (local barber) lived next to my high school. His son and daughter shot deer at long range every year. I graduated in 1962. Some of the men shot on my sisters farm. Nice to see Hoyer, Keiser and several others getting recognition.

It's a shame they didn't have the bullets we have now back then. My gun having been built in the late 60's has a 10 twist barrel and won't shoot some of the longer heavier bullets very well. When it gets a new barrel it will most likely be. 1:75 or 1:8 twist Hart barrel.

Absolutely do it. My 1:8 tw is looking great with Berger 153.5's. Working up to pressure now with us869 to see where I can get to. Things are very promising so far.

869 worked very well in my 7-300 weatherby with 180gr bergers. I think you will be happy.

Nice looking rifle. Does Pac-Nor have the KS Magnum contour programmed or did you use a different contour?

The original barrel was slimmer- I had to open up the fore-end to accommodate the Pac-Nor barrel…. My gunsmith had ordered one to match original specs but it came oversize and I didn't want months more of waiting for another barrel to get here.

Roy Weatherby developed and researched this round for the US Navy, in the late 50's early 60's . Navy didn't want it and Roy put the drawing away, then Adam brought it back to compete and beat 26 Nosler.

Ya, I felt a bit sorry for nosler. I'm sure it's a dandy cartridge. My brother bought me a vanguard shortly after it came out while I was recovering from knee surgery to keep me occupied. He took it back after I developed the 156 Berger load for it lol. If I remember correctly, they had problems with a 4 groove and had to change the forcing cone a bit when it first came out. Mine shot respectable with factory but holy crap what a laser beam with hand loads. I laughed when that milk jug challenge came out thinking how effortlessly it would be to shoot milk jugs out to 600 yards in decent conditions. Definitely wouldn't shoot 100 of them but wouldn't be hard to shoot a few. We were shooting clay pigeons and then shooting the chips at 600.
