How to measure a barrel

Just wondering where to measure to when measuring a barrel on a remington 700 varmint.thanks, Stevenlightbulb

The way to measure barrel length.

With the action closed and empty, insert a cleaning rod VERY CAREFULLY in the muzzel
and ease it all the way down untill it contacts the bolt face.

Then with tape or a marker pin mark the rod at the muzzel .

Remove the cleaning rid very carefully and measure from the tip of the rod to the mark
or tape.

This will give you the actual barrel length.

The "ATF" method is to place a rod down he barrel until it rests on the breech or bolt face with the action closed, with the firing pin retracted. Then mark the rod at the muzzle not counting a >removable< brake or other muzzle device. Extract the rod and measure to the mark. I'm not sure if that measurement method applies to revolver action rifles, but it does to other actions.

For a quick measurement on a Rem 700 just measure from the 1/8" diameter gas relief port in front of the ejection port to the muzzle. That will be close.
