Guys lets talk. POWER POWER POWER in the short action rifle

Interesting thread. I would think the 338 Norma case to work off of would be a good choice for a 338.
My question is why is it so important to use a SA?
Do you think you really save much weight over a LA ?

Its not important but that was the point of the thread to see how much power we could get out of the SA with the 338 bullet.

I just read something in a hunting mag today about the GALAXY looked interesting?

Okay... If you insist upon sticking with the magnum bolt face, aka WSM, then one of that line is all you can do. However, trueblue is absolutely correct about the 7 Fatso. At teh end of his article he speaks about the .338 Norma case and a longer Fatso so it can be done! It is a larger bolt face but represents the absolute most you can stuff into a short action repeater. Choose your caliber. That's the one!

I bet a 6.5 RUM would be a scorcher. With a 130 Scirocco it would be a true screamer.
With the 142 smk you would also be running them very fast.
Then there are the Carteruccios and maybe some new Wildcat bullets.
Not sure how long you can nurse the barrel along, but it would be a flat shooting cartridge with lots of energy.

It would definitely be a screamer but you would be lucky to get a load developed before your barrel went south!.......Rich

Bolt face does not matter. I only used WSM as a starting point. Only thing thats off the table is LA rounds and single round loading.

I'm thinking you could start with the 416 Rigby case and start working your dimensions from there. It will give you the most powder capacity. That is the parent case for the Lapua, which in turn is the parent case for the Norma mag. So I would start there.

I agree. I've heard people getting 120 NBT's at mid 3800's. Crazy. Has to be one hell of a barrel burner.

I ran some numbers on a 338 wsm shooting a 225 AB at 2800 fps
I think that velocity should be doable in a 26" rifle barrel.
The 225 should be a good bullet to help fit the magazine and have a proven track record on elk.

Looks like a legitimate 1000 yard elk rifle to me. With a #5 contour it could make a nice intermediate dual purpose rifle.

This is my data on my edge shooting the 250 AB which is what I killed my elk with at 1202 yards this year, the AB expanded well and weight 165 grains after being recovered, in the oposite side shoulder muscle, after breaking the spine..

I've had 2 338 WSM's one the first was based off the 270,300 case. It would push the 300gr berger 2600fps with a 28" barrel. The second is based on the 7 wsm case. While I'm not done with load development I'll keep you posted.

well what if we improved the wsm case and used a 338 bullet?

I don't know how much case neck length youd sacrifice doing this, as there isn't a lot of room for improvement on the wsm case without hindering it is some other way, but have you thought of running calcs using weatherbys double radious shoulder? You may gain a tiny bit of case capacity that way.?? My guess is that the typical Ackley improvement based on the typical tapering bottle neck case would do more harm than good on the wsm case. I've wondered about blowing out a 404 parent case longer than the wsm, but shorter than a RUM, but wondering was as far as I got.
Very interesting thread. I'm looking forward to following this one for a while:Dgun)
