This is my wife's first elk ever. She had an either sex tag for our late season and really was expecting to shoot a cow to fill the freezer. We got into elk the day before we found him but could not get a clean shot. Left them alone and hiked back in the next morning before daylight. The elk we had seen the night before still in the same spot and had brought friends. She shot her bull at 300 yds right through the front shoulder he went 20 yds and dropped. 120 grain SPBT out of her Remington 700 LSS 257 weatherby. She loaded her own bullets, practiced shooting a bunch before the hunt and called her own wind. We chrono'd that bullet at 3300 and it did exactly what it was supposed to. Great first hunt with my wife and now she is hooked for life.
