Fast vs. Slow Projectiles

It entirely depends the distance you are hunting. I ask folks wanting a new barrel what are the distances of your last ten kills? Then realistically what distance do you see your kills in text five years.

I have one 270 WSM and think it's GREAT cartridge in a longer barrel properly chambered. It's at its hunting best with 140 to 150gr bullets IMHO. 7mm's rule with the 168 to 180gr bullets, long distance hunting, so I always recommend moving up in bullet diameter——this for hunting which for me mean bullets that reliably stop game under the various and sometimes extreme conditions / circumstances.

In video example remember the heavy 22 bullet launched at 2600 will make a 1200 yards but will barely mark a steel target. Fun shooting but most of us hunt/kill stuff.
Are there any advantages to using heavy for caliber fragmenters up close? The extra weight keep them from blowing up, like some lightweight fragmenters?

Yes! But a more accurate description would be not keeping them from blowing up, because they don't blow up. Fragmenting bullets simply fragment. If there isn't enough starting mass, they run out of material to continue penetrating (depending on shot placement, impact velocity, and amount of resistance encountered).

The extra mass just allows them to have more mass to allow them to fragment and shed weight but not down to a point they lose forward momentum and stop penetrating too soon.

I've posted about this in much more detail, especially on my own website, but in this forum as well. It's actually been mentioned my many, just not me. Not trying to take any credit away from anyone else.

How have the 150gr ABLR performed on deer, elk etc? What ranges?
The ABLR no complaints but haven't pushed it past 540 yards, hence the questions about whether I should go to 170 grain in order. to extend the range.

I be decided to just do it. I've been putting it off to long.

Thank you for the input. The new barrel and load work is always exciting. I'm good a 150gr max because I can't get enough velocity to see a 170 benefit to me. I noted that you earlier mentioned 1,200 yards so that the 170 should pass the 150 fps around 9xx yards and be stronger on out to 1,200. Too bad that RL26 doesn't like my 270WSM. RL26 transforms the 270Winnie. Still looking for a powder that does that to the WSM.

That's why I responded as such in #10. My .270 AI was built primarily in 2012 for the 165/175 (2996 FPS, reach near 3100 FPS but group opened up and with pressure signs) Matrix VLDs with 30" Lilja 1:8" and at 1200Y; 1716 FPS/1144 FT-LBS with H4831 SC.

RL-17 and 16 were designed primarily for the WSM.

I have been using RL-17 for over a decade now in my .300 WSM 215 Berger at 2850 FPS out of 24" without any issues. Today, there are plenty of choices for the WSM. Good luck!

Not to mention the versatile bullet performance of the ABLR. It will smash bone AND expand, wrecking framework along with organs, plumbing and wiring. Hard to ignore the capability. The BC is pretty dang good…also.
it's awesome. I wish there were maybe more weight options. For me it was super easy to
Load for also. Just is so highly overlooked
 
I'm not sure how hard they can be pushed, with precision, but intend to find out.
Of course, Kirby Allen found the limit! They stayed together but the groups went south.
That alloy is soft…I suppose.

150 gr ABLR, 3220 1 in 10 twist

Do I need to rebarrel to an 8 to shoot a 170 berger ( 2950 fps) out to 1200 yards?
I have a 1:8 and you will have to.... however...you can go the opposite way which is what I've just started playing with...go 95 gr....at 3701 fps and be there in . 9 secs before the wind can catch up🤔

EVERYTHING he shot was one massive blood clot from halfway up the neck to the last rib! At both entry AND exit! Most of the time, shoulder went in the gut pile destroyed!
Mitch, on the other hand, preferred his lever .45-70 Gov't !
You could eat right up to the bullet hole!
Never more than a handful of bloodshot trimmings!

It all depends on what you want!
