Dry firing and snap caps

What is the consesus on dry-firing. Do you use snap caps or not?

When I store rifles, I pull the trigger with the bolt up, then, holding the trigger down, slowly lower it.

This eases the firing pin own slowly thus taking the load off the spring.

Snap caps are probably fine but I only own them for a fine 12ga.
