A long time ago I encountered Coydogs before I encountered coyotes. They did not survive long term because they did not drop their litters in the spring.
I was deer hunting in upstate NY (a little South of Utica) when it was still a "shotgun" zone. I was in the middle of crossing a large field when a full-grown doe came charging out of the woods and headed straight for me. It literally passed 2 or 3 feet from me and kept charging full tilt till it was out of the field.
So, I turned to look where the deer had entered the field and two Coydogs came out (one brown, one black). I thought they were just dogs at first but when they got about 15 feet into the field and saw me, they both did a 180 and went back into the woods, and they did not have collars.
That deer was pretty smart, but lucky I did not have a doe tag!

Canines will interbreed-discussion goes both ways, but as said DNA is the only way to tell. Back in the day, the head of locating wolves to Yellowstone said; "If you put a beagle and a wolf in a blender you can't tell the difference from DNA". Well we d$@%^ did not get Beagles. Apparently it works both ways, one can affirm or deny if the agenda doesn't fit the science. Been in a lab a bit-lab error exists, and tends to cluster around certain individuals.
DNA is likely to change, but the issue of canines in the wild hasn't in many thousands of years. Domestic dog or wolf doesn't make a lot of difference they are hard on the other animals.
At the rate they are moving south from Colorado the Mexican Gray Wolf, will cease to exist. If we reclassified canis lupus irremotus to never having existed, one can expect to hear similar going south. Regardless of how much money USFWS spends on them they are gone.
Coyote size like other species are noticeably larger north than south.
We had an owl in the neighborhood made a good living off of house cats. Like me if its wandering outside, he couldn't tell feral from pet.

My own personal anecdotes:
Back as a kid in the mid-70's all the way up to mid-90's, wild (actually, more free-ranging) dogs were really prevalent..."Men, women, children: killed them by the hundreds!"... well, let's just say we killed quite a few "wild" dogs... not hundreds.
Old close friend of the family and cattleman Tom Wilburn (a renowned harness racer back in the day) said that a pack of coyotes come into/around a herd of cows, the cows would just "pay attention" to them; however, one stray dog show up, the cows would get all bristled up and go into defense mode.
I've heard it rumored from several reliable people that in/on/around the old munitions site at Prairie, MS there is a sizeable pack of truly wild dogs occupying (or was back in the 90's) the grounds.
Speaking of cats, my wildlife biologist buddy says "wild" domestic cats are the number 1 worst predator for small game. Also, though I have been really hard on the coyotes in past - particularly last year, they are good for the burgeoning deer population.
