I'll secure it to a piece of wood and clamp it in my bench vice. I have a Harbor freight magnet indicator stand behind it.Looks like it should work as long as you have a solid and flat surface.

That's why a test indicator is better in this use than a dial.The only issue you may have is the pressure of the indicator making the nose of the cartridge bob up and down as you rotate it with your fingers.
