I have been trying to think of a way to help someone on this forum, or to a member of the forum who knows of someone less fortunate who loves to hunt (shoot) but lacks the resources. Maybe a wounded veteran, or someone else who has need? My idea is to have people submit candidates and a brief summary of why they would be a good choice. (names are not necessary). This may be a little unusual on this forum, but I see no reason why we can't do this (LEN)?
Here is my challenge:
I will provide a set of Whidden custom dies for any of the Sherman wildcats, along with free reamer rental, and 50 formed Norma brass.
I know that this forum has representatives for just about every component needed as well as gun smithing talent. If no one steps up for a part of the build, maybe another member that feels blessed could step up with a few $$$.
What do you guys think?.........Rich

NO SELF NOMINATIONS PLEASE!

I think I know someone whose needs should be considered.

Couple things:
- Should we PM you with info?
-You making making final decision? (That is ok with me. I trust your judgment and sincerity on this.)
- If it's a Savage build I will donate a like new Savage Model 12 VLP stock.

Thank you barrelnut! I haven't really thought through all the in and outs I guess, but i trust it will work out. Maybe we could pick, say the top 5 candidates, based on the people who respond to the thread and let all the responders vote on the final candidate? I would feel more comfortable with that. I guess the build can be on pretty much anything that is donated? Who knows; maybe people will be so generous we can build a couple:)......Rich

Barrelnut......would you mind posting something on the person you have in mind? Maybe if the need is shown, it will help the cause......Rich

I am all about helping someone in need, however, how could it be verified the person being nominated is legitimate? I don't like to be scammed or anyone else for that matter.

I think a raffle or giveaway would be the best option. Almost like Lens giveaways!

Ya, I have thought about that too, so I am open to suggestions. I guess I am trusting in the goodness of many of the people on this forum. The problem with a raffle or give away is it isn't necessarily going to someone in need either. I think if we had enough people nominated, and then let the people who WANT to be involved vote according to what is presented, it will work out ok. In other words, the people donating will be the registered voters. One thing I don't want is to pressure people! I realize that I am counting on some trust here. That is why I suggested having everyone involved decide because I don't, in any way, want this to be about me!. One way to do this is to have everyone send their contribution to whomever the gunsmith is that is putting it all together. If no gunsmith wants to step up, we can pay for that out of $$$ contributions. We all know who the gunsmiths are on this forum and I don't think they would chance scamming anyone and since it is all out of my hands, I won't be scamming anyone either. Hope this makes sense?. My goal is to meet someones need and not to just make contributors feel good about Christmas!....Rich

I know of someone who visits one of the sub forums from time to time who is a veteran that sustained a back injury during service. After service his career was spent as a deputy sheriff. Before retirement, he underwent surgery to repair the back injury, that did not go well. He is now retired with only disability income.

He and his wife always wanted to live in the high desert. So they purchased a piece of land in a desolate area. The land is not worth much more than the paper the deed is written on. For the last several years they have been living in a one room plywood shack without indoor plumbing or electricity (except what is supplied by a gas generator).

They have spent this last several years building a very modest home on the site with their own labor and what funds they save from the disability income. Work time is limited each day by the injury which causes pain to the extent that he is forever required to take strong pain medication that limits hours worked during the day.

Even with all of this, he and his wife are wonderful and cheerful people. His main hobby is shooting as he has a shooting bench build outside the front door of the shack where he spends his afternoons shooting his reloads at distant targets.

He has a few older guns but nothing special at all and nothing that would be considered a long distance rifle. He does hunt also but that is mainly limited to coyotes and such these days.

I'm sure this person is one of many who would love to have one of the toys some of us on the forum take for granted.

I would be in on having contributors nominate individuals like this who might be deserving and then vote for one of the nominees to receive a rifle from the group.
Would really be kind of nice. Hopefully we can work something out that is fair and on the up and up for all.

Thank you Barrelnut! This is the the kind of thing I was looking for. Perhaps this will get things rolling........Rich

I think this is a awesome thing you are trying to start elkaholic. Here is a idea but would be more work for you . Like myself i cant really post the person im thinkin of becuase he is on this site and would see my screen name and put two and two together, and as he would be very greatful , But he is also that type that would not like it if he put it together since he would feel like a hand out. You know how guys are . What if we can PM you and you post it anonymously no sceen name. Might help with people posting . But might be more work then its worth

Lots of good points here. I was apprehensive about posting myself, but thought the nominee would not likely see it.

I would like to suggest that this be taken off the public forum and a private method of online collaboration be used. Something like a private facebook page where only contributors are members. The contributing members then vote for a recipient from the nominations.

It may also be a good idea for only contributors to be allowed to nominate. Though you would not have to nominate anyone to contribute! I feel this would eliminate scamming to a great extent. Parts, $$$ or services could be offered. If there are enough contributors, it might not be a big chunk of change out of anyone's pocket at all. I would also think that an insanely expensive custom should not be the goal here ( unless someone donates a Curtis action with Russo wood or something...). But, I think a hotrod wildcat like a 6.5 SS in a non top of the line but accurate LR rig with adequate optics for LR shooting might make a good target. Just thinking...
