chambering issues

I may have put this is the wrong place. if so i apologize.

I had a 300wsm tikka t3x built into a 7prc by a smith ive used before with great results.
Tikka t3x action

just got the rifle back, looks phenomenal. couldn't be happier.

anyways.. he shipped the rifle with 2 pieces of hornady brass, both with I happened to notice showed ejector marks and flat primers. I didn't think much of it to be honest.

I mainly hunt with a nosler partition. during the summer i play around with eldm, nosler rdf on paper and steel. (this is exactly what i stated to the smith when I sent off the rifle via text. he replied (ok)

so i just got the rifle back, i loaded a 175gn nosler partition at saami (3.340 coal) bolt stops before it even begins to turn. I pull bolt back. bullet and case are still together but I have to put cleaning rod down barrel to knock it out of chamber.
I then look up noslers load data and see in their load data they used a coal of 3.260 so I load a 3.55 and same thing. wouldn't go. bolt wouldn't even begin to turn. cleaning rod it is.
so i grab the fired hornady case that he sent with the rifle and it chambers.
so to rule out me creating a problem when resizing the case i loaded a round with a coal of 3.334 with a new piece of adg that was never resized and again it wouldn't chamber. again cleaning rod.
so to rule out a problem with the batch of adg i loaded 3.334 in a piece of hornady brass once resized. wouldn't go. cleaning rod.
then i load a 3.260 in a brand new piece of unsized adg just for ***** and giggles. no go.
and of course a new piece of adg brass with no bullet will chamber.

im pretty sure the ogive is hitting the lands and stopping the bolt. its a firm stop. couldn't force it even if i wanted to. im also pretty sure if i load a 3.1 something that the partition will probably chamber. but to me its seems that putting the bullet that far into the case will raise pressure, and ill end up losing more speed when i have already given up some speed due to the barrel length (suppressor)

i called the the smith, and dude was easy to talk to. basically said its the ogive which i suspected. said it can be reamed but i need to make a choice between partitions and newer style bullets like eldx, eldm, bergers etc. and that may be true. but ill say that i never had to make that choice before with any other caliber.

this is where it gets weird. after i get off the phone with the smith i call a fried who drops off a coulple 7mm ttsx, sst, matchking and nosler rdf bullets.
so i load them each to sammi 3.340. none of them would chamber.

so then i loaded them each to their manufactures book length.
162 gn hornady sst 3.070
150 gn sierra match king 3.100
140 gn barnes ttsx 3.110
185 gn nosler rdf 3.320
i got them all to chamber, but i had to force them. and while forcing them i mean i would slide the bolt forward until it stopped. when the bolt stopped i cant rotate the bolt. i have to push the bolt forward until the extractor snaps over the case head then i can rotate the bolt handle down.

is what i am experiencing a throat too short? where do i go from here?

I use CBTO (often .015-.020" off the land) measurements over COAL when I load, unless I have a magazine restriction, then I find the best compromise between the two. However, you should have him fix it as he recommended.

Did you look at the reamer print before having the barrel chambered ?
 
How does factory ammo chamber?
When I started building rifles, I was taught to always chamber a barrel to head space gauges and check with factory ammo. This worked until
I was asked to chamber 'Match' reamers, leade and throats are different and it was a learning curve in adjusting throat lengths to suit customers needs and wants.
It is totally feasible your throat is short, but, there could be a burr at the throat start, misalignment or even crooked chamber causing your issue.

Send it back to your 'smith and have him rectify the issues. Supply 3 dummy rounds, this ensures they fit prior to him sending the rifle back.

Before I load the first load, I Split a case neck on opposite sides all the way into shoulder 1/16. Then Clean the burrs on inside of case neck. Then Run into FL die

Then put bullet slightly in the split neck and chamber. Extract carefully and measure CBTO and COAL. Do several time to ensure repeatability.

Check vs sammi first, then reamer specs if a custom build.

Will identify throat problems immediately, and gives you information for your discussion with you gunsmith.
 
Sounds like he throated it for the bullet that he thought you wanted it to be for when you should have and him chamber for the longer bullets and take what you get for the others.

I'd say build the round you want and send it back to him so he can throat it to the new specs.
 
I bought a box of factory loaded eldx on my way home, chambers them perfectly. 3.291 coal. I load eldx in my short mag so ima see how they shoot before doing anything.
 
Coal only matters for loaded round length in a box, do you have a tool for measuring ogive to base, that is the measurement you need to know between different bullets and thebone critical for understanding throating.
 
Try dropping a loaded round down in the mag and running the bolt.
I have had some rifles that don't like to single feed by dropping a round in the ejection port, but fed fine from the mag as designed. Sounds crazy, but it has happened.

Pull the extractor claw and ejection plunger and see how they chamber without those added forces.

I did notice you kept trying lengths longer than book specification.
 
COAL on a custom rifle build really has little comparison to standard COAL literature. Like a couple people suggested, strip bolt and verify empty case fits, then choose your bullet and use a split neck case or partially sized neck case to moderately hold a bullet. Then insert and close bolt and measure the cartridge OAL off the Ogive. This will be a starting point to measure seating depth max, but finer measuring is possible with patience. Ignore literature about what COAL a factory rifle comes with or lading book offers, your in a different place now. You could also buy produced tools to help with COAL measuring. And of course each projectile will have its own COAL.
 
If any issues like this I start with a piece of new brass and then try one of my fired/resized pieces. Once I determine the brass is good and my resizing settings are good, then I do like some of others and partially seat my bullet of choice and jamb that baby in the chamber and measure. Do that a few times. Then start seating in from there until I get no or slight resistance closing the bolt. Being you reload, I'd prefer a little "longish" FB over SAAMI.
