kinda late now. break in starts from the first round.
shot and clean after each round for the first 10-20 rounds or so. then start cleaning after each 3 round goup. everyone has there own process. I use something simular to this. look at Krieger, Lilja, Pac-nor or any other barrel makers website and they all have their own process for break in. But if you have already shot 40 rounds I would just come up with a good cleaning ritual and start load work-ups. If the barrel dont shoot you can always replace it and start fresh
I would soak the barrel overnight with a copper cutter and scrub the bore so there is no visible trace of copper. Then take it to a smith with a borescope and check for any machining burs. You may find it has already been broken in with those 40 rounds providing there hasnt been to much copper built up.
