From my research The Pulsar Apex XD50A is one of the best, it offers 384 by 288 resolution, with 1.9x magnification and 50Hz refresh rate.

The Pulsar 50 is a great unit. It is what Zen(knowledgeable thermal member) uses and is probably a best buy and for most would be plenty. I really like the upper zoom and the recording feature. However, the Reap(640x512 resolution) blows it away. The Pulsar 50 is what I was using when I was not 100% sure that was a bobcat in the road at 100 yards. I could have moved around or let him move and made a 100% I D. You can also find it on sale or model end close out for about $3500.
