Anything over 150yds is "long range"

I will try to keep the following rant brief. If any of you are from an area where rifles are not allowed for big game hunting you may understand my pain. I am the type of person who likes to share my experiences and passion for hunting and shooting with anyone who expresses any interest in talking about it. However, here in southern Michigan every word related to long range seems to be dismissed as an exaggeration or fabrication. The general population here seems to view anything over 150yds as "long range", anything over 250yds is "extreme long range" and anything over 300yds is **** near impossible and if you claim to be able to shoot with any form of consistency beyond 500yds you're a liar. My discussions are often greeted by a sarcastically doubtful "That's pretty far...". I realize exactly how far it is, I own a high end rangefinder specifically for that purpose. I have actually been told by one person that there are only 3 people in the world that can shoot 1000yds. So if the other two of you are reading this we should meet up and talk about it. LOL. OK, rant over. Is there anyone else here that feels my pain?

Here in Ohio there is a lot of people who refer to deer slugs as punkin balls. Those guys think a scoped slug gun is crazy.
But I live with in a half hour of three rifle ranges one is 400 yards, one is 1000 yards and one is 1 mile. Once you go thru those gates the whole world changes and there is $10,000.00 rifles, and lots of knowledge. So it really depends on who you talk to...

I can count on one hand the number of people I know in my area that shoot beyond 200yds. It's just frustrating to talk about a western hunt or long range varmint kill with a fellow hunter and be insinuated as a liar. I envy you westerners (and buckeyes I guess... never thought I'd say that. LOL, JK.)

Relativity..

Long Range = farther then you shot last time.

I used to get huffed up about it. Now I just invite people out to shoot farther then they've shot last time. Having a 1100 range makes that helpful.

I do this for myself. What people believe or don't believe is largely on them. Hell of a lot more credible than there is no such thing as an Islamic terrorist crap many would rather believe:rolleyes:

Tell your friends, I have a guy out here who shoots a 45-70 sharps(Uberti)
At 1000yds, he only hit steel 1 out of 100 tries but we have a ball watching him laub huge, slow projectiles.
We joke, after he lets one go, if someone wants to drive down and see if he hits.
It's certainly all about challenging ones self and just having good ol' fashioned fun.

on a related note--we found the lead bullet he hit on steal at 1000yds, it had a slight dent in it but otherwise intact.

Your options as I see them:

1. Stop bragging...:D:D:D
2. Find new friends.
3. Take them out and prove it.

I get the opposite sometimes, when people learn of my military Sniper background they think I can make hits thousands of yards (or miles) out. I try to let them down softly.

I was waiting for someone to tell me to stop bragging. Lol. I try to make sure people know that I'm by far a novice in this long range game but maybe people do think I'm bragging. Idk. I guess I'll just have to learn to deal with it. I am in the process of talking one of my coworkers into his first LR rig so maybe I'll have someone to shoot with who can vouch for me. Lol.
