Great trip up north. Was using compound bow, 2315 aluminum arrows. 3 blade heads.
Got to slave lake Saturday night. Couldn't sleep, up at 330 am. Breakfast and off to camp.
Guide informed me had a huge bear with white patch charge him 3 times. Said close to 7 ft. As soon as he dropped me off, got settled in blind, took a leak. I heard a bear huff, he was 15 ft behind me. I had the guides 450 bushmaster with me too.
He came at me 3 times, clacking his teeth. Final charge was 10 ft. I finally got an arrow nocked, took a shot as he turned in the pine trees. Got a deflection and barely creased his leg. Light blood, non lethal hit. First time ever felt I was in danger.
All week lots of bears within 10 ft. Nothing worth taking. Friday night, final night.
Got in stand, same thing had a bear come in 5 minutes later. Passed it for 20 minutes. Finally said heck, time to arrow one. 3 yard shot quarter away. Big snuffer head through like cheese. 3 seconds and dead, I counted. 30 minutes later had a decent one come in offered a 13 yard quarter away shot. I perfectly put a Muzzy 3 blade traditional head in the rear pocket, dead in 5 seconds. I counted. 20 yards, and 35 yards recovery.
Pretty happy now, not monster bears…..but can't be lucky every time.

They did take two 7 ft bears in camp and one 6'10". Absolute monsters

The bruin on the right looks to have some good long term potential. Are you able to get ages off these bruins?

no idea of ages, don't care. I also don't care what people think. Not big bears, I knew that when I drew on them. But very clean kills. I'm not sitting behind to make them look bigger, guide had to help me up, because my knee is about shot. I'm getting old, still like hunting and harvest. Went out Montana bears last couple days, flipped my mountain bike in black mud, did a face plant on the rocks. Seekins hit the dirt, so back in the safe, till I can check zero. Finished my hunt with 30-06 mini Kimber. Broke both shifters on the bike I hit so hard.
Doctor visit in morning, then back out with 340 wby and 300 ultra mag. Watching beautiful black sow with chocolate cub daily.

I scared him more than anything. He'd have been my 2 nd best!

I'm a curious George kind of guy, I love to learn about bruins. Big little or small I love them all. I'm curious about the ages on bear and better yet to compare size of bears skulls and body size to how old they are.

Case in point my personal biggest bruin for skull size (20 3/16) and it was a 5 1/2 year old bruin. I've also been around bruins taken that we 19, 22 and 29 years old. Two of those old bruins were sows and one was a big old boar.

Bottom line, bears just intrigue the heck out of me, I love watching and studying them and don't have much desire to kill them anymore. Not to say that I won't take another before I'm done but I love watching, observing and learning about them and don't take any satisfaction from killing them. I like to slip in close and watch them and I totally love calling them. In the last couple years I've seen 3 big bruins (19-21" range), called in two to close range (34 yds and 42 yds) and snuck into another to 110 yds. I didn't drop the hammer on any of the 3 and none of them had a clue I'd ever been there.

I just wanted to know if the Canadian FWP's do any work to see how old the bears were. Not sure why you would add that "you don't care what people think". I wasn't throwing salt, just asking a question.

Best of luck the rest of the season, I'm taking June 10th-15th to go to the hill, I've seen a bruiser of a brown phase 2 of the last 3 years and hope to see him again. I just hope he's still out there passing on his bruiser genes:)

Just got home, glassed up 2 last night. Back on the hill a 5:30 am. Spotted another at 7am. Far, far-away. Got on the downwind side of a big block of timber. 10 minutes exactly called in this bear. Shot before crossing the creek at 60 yards. Pics later…..300 ultra mag KS Remington 165 accubonds. Pack out was horrible, the knee is done! Now for rest.

21" is a monster plus P! I know not all bruins are entered into the Montana book but if I recall right there is only 8 bears entered in the book that go 21 or 21+.

Like I say, not all bruins are entered, If I recall right I've got or have been in on 6 taken in the 19"-20" range and only one was entered.

Anytime one breaks 19 in Montana on a spot n stalk hunt one really has a trophy of a lifetime. To put it in perspective back when I was hunting bears hard I would look at 35-45 different bears a year. Of those one to maybe 3 at most would go what I figured was 19" or more. And generally it was only one a year!

Not worried about throwing salt. I'm just a bit defensive about things after 17 years of vile, evil people on last job. I still can fight and will in a second. Probably being in pain a ton lately has bearing!

Sorry the knee is toast, been to that movie all too many times. But if you get to the surgery soon you should be doing well by fall. If I recall right you have a moose hunt in Sept or so.

Dogs,I have several friends with 19-20'' bears and myself and son.On a side note dont know where it stands now .But a guy I worked with for years, he shot a nice 7 ' cinnamon. the local taxidermist said biggest he'd seen in MT,skull was in 19+ if I recall.That guy was out with a friend, this was probably 20 years ago, and they walked up on bear and it treed, he arrowed and was state record at time, it went 21,i dont recall by how much.Friend of mine that I hunted with in AK,has the super slam, think it was around 96'.He shot #3 pope.I saw bear in personas 7-6'' and head I think back was 21 13/16.Black with brown snout.Snout looked like a brick, it was a incredible bear.Id have to find my notes, but if think it was a small Is near POW.The guy I went up there with they took something like 70 bears over a 20+ year span.With multiple Boone,but it was all archery
