A new 308

The other day when everyone was speculating about what the new Weatherby cartridge would be I quipped that I was "very disappointed" that I had just purchased a 308. The comment was all tongue in cheek. The rifle came, a Winchester 70 Extreme Weather Tungsten in 308. Purchased dies but they still are not here so I went to Walmart and bought a box of Federal 150 grain Power Shoks for $25 just to get it sighted in. Took it out today and I have to say I am impressed. The rifle looks great but man can it shoot. Cant wait until my dies show up and I can start playing for real. 103 yards prone over bags. Im not much for writing letters but I think Im going to let Winchester know that they deserve a pat on the back for this one.

I wound up with some of those Walmart Federals once. They shot good in my gun and did a good job on deer . Solid cup and core .

I have 2 outdated .308 rifles and have no intention of switching to a modern caliber. They still work.

A wise mentor told me back in the mid-1990's when I was entertaining notions of the 7 STW (for someone living in NY that probably would never be able to hunt out west due to finances and disability) that it was important to have at least one firearm in a common caliber that would be easy to acquire ammunition for, should the SHTF.

If one were to select a "new" chambering, it would prudent to lay up a store of brass in case it turned out to be a flop in a few years. We know of those new introductions over the past few decades that are no longer with us and the ammo suppliers no longer support.

The fact that it grouped like that with $25 Walmart Power-Shoks tells you everything you need to know. That ammo isn't trying to impress anyone, if a rifle shoots it well, it's a legit shooter.

It's like a three legged stool. Knock one of the legs off and it's useless. It takes all three IMO.

Cancel the reloading equipment and load up on that ammo before it's gone!

I though 308's were being made obsolete by the modern cartridges.

PS: look at Barnes data for 168 TTSX and CFE 223 powder. 2880 is no gimmick.

Thanks for the load info. I have some CFE 223 as it is my go to for a 6.5 Grendel rifle that shoots lights out.

Regardless if you start hand loading for it, I'd suggest buying a case of that ammo. Rare that factory groups like that for a hunting rifle. Meaning, 3 rounds is all it needs to keep together like that.

If I cant get the same groups with my hand loads I may try that. The reason I bought it was to use up some of the 30 caliber bullets I have accumulated over the years. Also playing with a little less recoil than my 300 Winchester which I just use for elk hunting.
