7prc vs 300prc

Did a 26" 300 just like mine for a buddy - not a ton of performance difference over the 24" and we can argue for days which one is easier to maneuver and how much more is needed. Anytime we are getting bullets above 3000 FPS we have done our job IMO

I did not build it for a brush gun. I built it for one purpose - run the highest BC bullets, with the best performance, at Max Velocity to hunt mid to large animals. In that requirement the 24 and 26" bbls are perfect for the longer ranges we see out west.

To @lancetkenyon point. For your needs in N America, the 7 PRC (28N is amazing but way overbore and a barrel burner) with a 24" bbl will do everything you want in a very potent big game rifle at any shooting distance with a recoil signature that is completely manageable

It is amazing how many people complain about a rifle being a barrel burner. I have a lot of friends who hunt a lot and I don't know any one of them to replace a barrel. If you stop and consider the cost of bullets $3-5 each that means 1000 rounds will cost 3k-5k compared to 1k-1.2k for a barrel. Why not choose the best velocity with minimum drop and wind deflection. I have put 800 rounds through my 28N at 3250-3300FPS since 8/15 and still shoots 1/8 to 1/4 MOA groups.

I have a few overbores including a 7/300 NMI. Shoot them sparingly due to replacing one bbl at 1040 rounds. IME when they open up, they open all the way from .25 to 2 MOA in about 20 rounds. Sucks if that is the only rifle you have.

If a guy has one rifle and one rifle only to do all his hunting, as the OP appears to have, he may shoot more and want something that gives 2x bbl life. The PRC's are perfect for that.

4500' AMSL & 45° F. Late Coues conditions.

7mm 175 Elite, G7 BC .336, 2950fps from 22". 945yds, 1800fps, 1259ft/lbs. Recoil energy 24.07lbs

7mm 195 EOL, G7 BC .387, 2820fps from 22". 1080yds 1800fps, 1401ft/lbs. Recoil energy 25.68lbs

308 230 Hyb, G7 BC .368, 2820fps from 22". 1100yds, 1800fps, 1657ft/lbs. Recoil energy 36.01lbs

I have shot multiple lightweight shorter suppressed versions of both. There is no comparison for recoil. The 7PRC is fine to shoot. The 300PRC rocks you. If you want to shoot my 10lb 300PRC suppressed, you can meet me at the range.

If you want to step up the 7mm game...there is always the 28 Nosler. 22" should get you 3000+fps w. 195s. Or 3100+ w. 175s.

It is odd to see that the 195 EOL launched at the same speed as the 230 Hyb looses its speed marginally faster even though it has an appreciably higher BC. Assuming proper stabilization of the bullets this should not be the case, I believe.

It is odd to see that the 195 EOL launched at the same speed as the 230 Hyb looses its speed marginally faster even though it has an appreciably higher BC. Assuming proper stabilization of the bullets this should not be the case, I believe.

Great catch! The 230 is supposed to be 2820fps. But I had fat fingered 2920fps MV in my Shooter app.

I have been telling the OP to build a second economical shooting rifle to shoot a lot for practice, but still double as a good hunting rifle.
