Anybody loading a 7-08 with 162's or 168's. I have a 7-08 that was built on a long action and has been throated to keep the bearing surface above the neck shoulder junction so I can fit enough powder in the case. What loads are you running and what powders should I try?

I had good luck with h 4350 & cci lr the load I was using shot two bergers and one amax into .416 three shot group but when I ran out of cci other brands of primers showed pressure with my load, I was getting pretty good velocities out of a 26 in barrel

I've got a bunch of h4350 Den. How many grains were u running? I thought about testing 44-46.5

My load in my rifle was 47 gr of Hodgdon 4350 with a 168 gr berger at 2.885 oal, Winchester brass,& CCI large rifle primers. , I derived this from the Lee Modern Reloading manual 2nd Edition it lists for a 168 gr jacketed bullet with H4350 44.5 for start &47.2 for max @ 2.800 Min O.A.L START LOW & WORK UP

I started at 44.4 and worked up to 46.4 in .4 gr increments. The 168 classic has a long Bering surface which might cause pressure earlier. If it doesn't Ill go up further.

Top left to bottom right. 44.4, 44.8, 45.2, 45.6, 46, 46.3. Second shot went low on 46 and 46.3. Where should I adjust seating depth?

my best guess is bottom left, were you getting any decent velocities on the higher loads ?

Went with 45.8. Shot a seating depth test this afternoon. 10 and 15 off had 1/4" groups and an ES less that 10fps at 2690. Will load a .012 off and DONE.

Time for some CPR and bring this thread back to life in lieu of a recent topic.

Does anyone run heavy pills in their 7-08? I'm talking 175-180gr? I've had good luck running up to 150's and I know the go to is 140's in the 7-08. I've read performance falls off but I also read one guys post where he was doing pretty good w/ 180's (I think). I picked up some 175gr lrab's and if my gf pulls an elk hunt I might just work up a load... will I be wasting my time?

my honest opinion , the 7-08 does not have enough case capacity for heavy bullets , especially in a magazine fed short action . I played with berger 168's for a little while a few years ago , I was not impressed with the velocity , accuracy was ok . I use 120's in my girlfriends , and 139's and 140's in mine with good results .

I'm not worried about magazine length. I am assuming you loaded the 168's to mag length with unimpressive results?

Heres what I've found so far:
Some say NO
Some compare it to the 308 which people are shooting 215's out of
Few have said yes

Hodgdon says they're pushing 175gr Nosler Partitions 2515fps w/ h4831.
