Most of the FPS data is for 24" barrel. Anyone have real world FPS data with a short barrel? Looking at a shaker barrel light weight hunting rifle but want to make sure it can deliver those long range 500 yard kill shots

I just built a new one as a lightweight Sheep rifle with a 21" barrel. My plan was to use Lapua brass with the small primer pocket and to achieve 2900 with a 130 JLK when the bbl was broke in. After nine rounds I loaded 10 rounds in .2 grain increments to find a good velocity node. I loaded from 43.2-45 grains H4350 and velocities started at 2802 and ended at 2927. I was pretty impressed since the velocity should come up 40-60fps as the bbl reaches 100 rounds. I did the same test with 135 JLK's, velocities started at 2720 and topped out at 2821. Accuracy is spot on, it's shooting in the .2's and .3's consistently and weighs in at 6lbs 7 ounces scoped.

Awesome! Who makes the stock, action and barrel?

Also are those loads with the highest FPS on the top end for pressure too? What would you expect Hornady factory ammo to do as far as FPS goes?

Stock is a McMillian Hunters edge, action is a LPA Razor TI, and bbl is a Proof Sendero light. I would say I am getting real close to pressure with these loads but primers are still round, no smileys, and easy bolt lift as well. Primers pockets are still as tight as new brass. Can't help you on hornady factory ammo as I've never shot it.

I have a Bergara HMR with a 22" barrel. Hornady ELD Match 140gr factory ammo is consistently in the 2680 fps range.

Hornady lists that load at 2710 out of a 24". Guess the 2" only given marginal increase in FPS

Tagging in on this as I'm interested as well. I've got a 20" Christensen Arms barrel being put on my ultra lightweight hunting rifle.

Quikload has 140gr Bergers getting pushed at 2750 with RL17, and right under 60k pressure out of Lapua Brass.

Will see if the program matches the rifle once it gets in. My only concern is I'll be using small magnum primers. But as with any load, I'll start low and work my way up.

I am shooting a full custom rifle with a 22" proof barrel and suppressor. A shade over 2800 with 140 Berger elite hunter.

What action are you using? I've got a Pierce Engineering ultralight Titanium being used for my build.
What powder and OAL are you using for the 140 elite hunters?

my 21" suppressed gets 2910fps with Hornady factory 120 ELD-M, and 2690 Hornady factory 140 ELD-M across the magnetospeed.

Interesting you assumed the increase in mv after 100 rounds. My new Xbolt 22" barrel suddenly sped up over 100 fps after 150 rounds. Berger 130 VLDH, Lapua, BR4, 43.3gr H4350 ->2985fps I thought something was wrong with my chrono, but the increase was with several different charge weights. I also noticed that velocities were slightly higher with Virgin Lapua vs. all subsequent loadings. I've grown weary of suspecting my chronograph, a Pro Chrono, after 5+ years, so I'm considering a Lab Radar now. I'm retesting tomorrow to verify.
