This is my new baby! It's a 338 Lapua Mag that was built by Kirby Allen using the following:
BAT HR action
Lilja Raptor Stalker contour 28"
Small pain killer muzzle break
Badger M5 CIP DM
Manner's T-4 stock
Jewell trigger 2lbs
NF Ultral light rings
NF NSX 5.5-22x50
The rifle weighs right at 10 1/4 lbs with out the scope.
As can be seen in the photo's, this rifle sure can shoot for being a light weight by large magnums standards! In fact, if I were a better riflemen I am sure it would be much better.
When I first recieved the rifle it would shoot two bullets touching and the 3rd, a flyer about 1" high. This continued everytime I was out at the range. To ensure it was not shooter error, I had a buddy who is considered one hell of a sniper shoot the rifle. His first two were almost one hole and his 3rd was again 1" high. Everything was rechecked on the rifle and it was discovered that the scope base had become loose. I called Kirby who had me ship to rifle right back to him. To solve the problem, Kirby pinned the rail and added another set up NF rings to make sure the scope would not slip. He test fired the rifle and when it was to his satisfaction, he sent it back to me. I immediately took it to the range and it consistently shot 1/2 MOA. See attached photo's of groups.
Two days later found me hunting in the boothill of NM for Coues deer. The first day of the hunt I located a decent buck at 764 yards. I entered my data and adjusted my scope and fired. My spotter told me I had just missed it to the right, but my elevation was good. I did not realize the wind was as strong as it was, so I added windage and pulled the trigger. This time the coues deer went down, but that's another story.
One week later found me in AZ hunting elk. On the last day of the hunt I found a shooter bull and was able to drop him at 180 yards through the cedar trees, not a LR shot by any means, but I was able to test the rifle, which flattened the elk using the 300 SMK.
