338 EDGE for Rockchucks..........

Well, I just had a 338 edge built and the real first opportunity I had was our annual week long rockchuck hunt held in central Idaho. We all have been doing this for many many years and long ago we formed CIRCA---Central Idaho Rockchuck Association. It is a week of long range shooting and fellowship between life long friends. We have various locations that we can shoot from and one of the local farmers lets us shoot out to almost 2000 yards although we routinely are shooting at around 1600 yards. Most of the members of our tight knit club are in the 1000 yard club and trying to get into the 1500 yard club on a very small target known as a yellow bellied marmot. I am a visual guy so here are some photos from our week and one of them shows terminal results from a 300 SMK from a 338 edge.

Now that looks like a pile of fun. Was anyone successful obtaining membership in the 1,500 yard club?
I recognize the rifle, and the glass... How they working for you?

No one obtained membership yet in that club although we were SOOOO close as in inches. One of our issues here is wind---its always windy so elevation is usually close but the wind will kill ya. Rifle is working great but i'm still in the load development stage for it---messing with seating depth. And once you have the binos adjusted, they work great although passing them back and forth between a couple of different spotters is kind of a pain in the butt.

That's an exit hole from about 660 yards and there was quite a bit of air time.
And yes, I know there is some improvement on the glass but hey, as the saying goes, I've got champagne tastes on a beer budget..........
One of the things we have GOT to do is get a good long distance rangefinder.
And something else about those weavers----I put them up against my brand new nightforce and they are clearer. Pretty amazing.

the weaver spotting scope of that vintage was a great scope. you are locked in at 20x however and that is sometimes too much and other times not enough as you no doubt know. weaver also made eyepieces fitting other brands of scopes which are also excellant.
im just assuming your moving a scope in order to change users?
not a good way to go as it also affects alignment.
i know a few guys who could build you a bracket for those. joel would also
as would others here. with those the scope would move but it would be part of the bracket and alignment wouldnt be affected. some guys are more proud
of their work than others and as a result prices vary.
$250 to $300 will put you in buisness however with your scopes of coarse.
if you really want to make somebody feel bad set those up next to a set of
swarovski 15x56s on a tripod and they will hate you.

as for the rangefinder, you might be surprised to know not everybody is using lasers.
if portability isnt an issue the old wild and barr&stroud units are worth owning.
i have a swarovski also but would trust it as far as i could throw it backwards.
i saw a wild on ebay about a month ago sell for under $100.

jmden, you have to understand that we have some really, really tough chucks here. These are NOT nancy boy chucks and even Chuck Norris would have a hard time with them. As Springfield Armory says, "bring enough gun." So, we do.
