338 Berger Sinclair Availability

Well....not being one to let the grass grow under my feet, BTW it snow'd again last night.:rolleyes:

I went here http://www.longrangehunting.com/for...gers-new-338-caliber-300-grain-hybrids-56346/ and read/studied and let my mind extrapolate my goals and objectives.

With out much hesitation I broke out the ol' charge card and called Sinclair. B... answer'd. Learned two things. She's a pleasant person and that their computers are down. Duh!

I gave the bullet details. She said we don't sell those. I said yes you do.:) She said let me check. Pause...... She says we don't have a 'number' for them yet. I said put me down for a 50 count. She will call back when they can complete the transaction.:)

I'm anxious to see if my RUM will shoot them. If so my RUM immediately becomes and Edge. But the Edge then goes up a couple of notches and the AM goes beyond imaginable.:)

I promise that I will shoot them through "media" and test terminal performance before I use them on game. But not much before.:rolleyes:

Will I have buyer's remorse on my new build or will Berger's next offering be something in .375? I should live long enough.:rolleyes:

I just placed an order for 100 to try them out in my 338 lapua. I got the same repsonse as roy did at first. The guy did say that the bullets had been shipped from berger and should be at there facility in a week.
I will be shooting them through my new Surgeon Remedy while I wait on my 338AM to be completed.

How much better are these going to work? I should have my new edge with in a week and already bought 500 300 smk's. I am going to use it for elk this fall and hate to change since all the good reports on how well the sierra can roll an elk. Would hate to go out and punch a hole in a trophy elk.

As Berger stated, the jury is out on terminal performance.

I gathered materials for terminal tests when I get the bullets as I've scheduled terminal tests of some other designs in a different caliber before I get serious about using them on game.

I gather all of the SMKs that I shoot into the very fine sand (blow sand) backstop. The SMKs never come apart but have melted or shed the lead except @ the base, for the most part. The jacket is one tough cookie but expans at distance, so far.

I'm thinking they are a great 'bone' bullet.

Great penetration, perfect performance and 18" penetration on the 650# already dead bore a couple of years ago.

The SMK is gonna be pretty tough to beat.

Judging by what Brian says you want have to worry about them "punching" a hole in anything here is his entire statement.

My 'gut feeling' is that they'll perform similarly to VLD's in other calibers. If they don't fragment/expand the same, they will destabilize/tumble on impact, which is another way to increase frontal area (as opposed to mushrooming) and cause a lot of damage. Regardless of what it does, it's 300 grains of metal that carries a lot of energy. Look how lethal the SMK's are and they're not designed for terminal performance at all.

Berger's official position is that these bullets should not be used for hunting animals until they're properly tested on appropriate media and proven to be suitable.

Guess we wont know until this fall. I will stick with the smk's in my new edge until we get some feedback. Im sure in months to come there will be plenty to read here. Btw what part of Pa. are you from.

No, i own property and hunt in Bedford co. about 10 miles n. of mason dixon. I actually live in Cumberland, Md. area. PM if you would like to tie up some time and drag race some 338's. I just got a nice e-mail my new 338 edge is done and going to be shipped this week. Xmas does come in May.
